I know this may sound like a really stupid question - what's the size of tyre in the bighorn I can happily run WITHOUT having to cut anything or getting a lift kit?

    Thanks :-)

Running 245/75/16 on a D2 requires no mods at all, on the D1 the rear guards require a minor trim

    what is 245/75/16 when converted...?

    is a 245/75/16 bigger than a 255/70/16?

only reason I asked was I was pricing up a 265/70/16 but they didn't do them in that size and I was offered a 265/75/16 for 270 i think it was a tyre but I figured that 265/75 was a tad to tall for the D1 as i reckon rubbing would occur even with a lift and trimmed guards.

    the dimmensions work as follows

Footprint/Profile/Rim Size Now the Profile is it is say a 255/70/16 this would mean that the side wall height is 70% that of the footprint which = 178.5 now this has to be doubled = 357 which is 35.7cm now add the rim which is in inches so multiply it by 2.54 which gives us 40.64 add this to to total side wall height and you get 30.055" tall tyre i know i did this a little scratchy but the idea is there. (im still waking up)

Side wall heights of the respective tyre sizes are:
    245 x 0.75 = 184mm
    255 x 0.70 = 178mm

So tyre diameters will be practically the same.

    265 x 0.70 = 186mm
    265 x 0.75 = 199mm

Don't forget that 265 is 20mm wider than 245. On stock backspace wheels the extra width will foul the radius arms and guards worse.

I run LT265/75/R16 MTZ's with soft springs and 3" lift on my disco I.

My guards were trimmed for the 33" bfg muddies that I had before (larger than 265/75/R16). If not already trimmed, the 265/75/R16 would have made a mess of the guards.

    Any luck with prices?

Mine were $220 a tyre fitted alignment and balance plus a free rotation after 5000K
I spoke with Bob Jane in Frankston and they said
"$245 fitted and balanced. If you would like an alignment it would be $49, this will also include a second alignment and balance F.O.C after 5000km. "

think I will still ring around!

Has anyone been able to source a better deal from a tyre supplier in Melbourne for these tyres?

    Thanks

Thought I'd share my experience so far with these tyres.
The D1 is my first 4WD and I've never had mud tyres before so keep that in mind as you read on.

Just got back from 10 days in Tassie where we did 2500km on sealed and unsealed roads. The Bighorns I had fitted the day before we left were great on both dry and wet seal, always predictable and never showed any sign of just "letting go" in the wet.
On unsealed/gravel roads they were excellent and gave a lot of confidence in oncoming vehicle situations where you had to head into the soft stuff on the shoulder. The roads ranged from sandy to approx 50mm exposed road base.

Noise-wise, on really smooth asphalt they howl a bit, but its not really noticeable with the windows closed (keeping in mind I've got a 300tdi so there's a bit of background noise!!). On roads with a coarser chip you can only just hear them with the windows up.

When pushed a bit harder on dry tar the D1 tends to oversteer going into corners throttle off or under brakes, but seems quite neutral under power. Not sure if this is the tyres, suspension lift, my worn swivel bearings or just general vehicle characteristic.

Wear wise there is no discernible wear, chips or cuts. I can still see the remains of the molding "hairs" on the tread blocks.

Overall I'm quite happy so far. Just need to get them out into the bush now and try them off-road.

Fair question Landyprincess raised earlier, That being will the 245/75's fit on the standard LR spare wheel carrier without alteration. Probably good to know at what point would you have to look at alterations in regards to tyre size for future referance.
Did I read somewhere that it is as simple as flipping the spare mount over, giving it more height away from the rear step.

yes that is correct..but you might get away with it as I can fit a 255/70/16 on my'n now and thats very aggressive tyres and fits on ok still a little more space....

Although i have hit that bar enough that its rapily reducing

    PRICE OF BIGHORNS!!!!!

I've just rang around a couple of places in Port Macquarie and I am rather disappointed at the pricing..... I was quoted $330 and $315 and that is not what I was expecting at all.
If i have to travel to Sydney or Newy I will because at that price I could travel to and from either place and still come out in front!!!!!
