Thread: under bonnet lining

Interesting,cant help you with your question,but the D2 is just as bad,sags down & rubs on the engine attinuator cover.Sounds like a great improvement on the D1

I had one replaced under warranty once when i complained,and 6 months laterit was rubbing on the engine again

I recon if you take it off you will hear more motor noise & the bonnet will get a lot hotter heat may damage bonnet paint.

Perhaps some of that quilted silver insulation (Sisalation) could be cut to shape and held in place with panel plugs. I think its just the sheer weight of the under bonnet baffling that causes it to sag and rub
And it gets worse when it gets wet (I've even head of it causing HT leads to short on the V8)

I have a 94 disco which had the lining fall off completely after playing in the water and mud

There is no difference what so ever in temp gauge, bonnet probably gets hotter but I cant say I have noticed it, finally yes it is louder but after a while it just becomes the noise that is makes and you dont notice it

MIne was drooping down and causing a mess under the bonnet. There is a Mercedes bonnet liner/insulator that fits the Discovery bonnet very nicely...it needs a bit of trimming but I was able to fit it myself using the original retainer clips and a bit of contact adhesive.

I wish I could tell you the part number or model from where it came but I got it from my local garage who've done the same retro fit on alot of Discoveries here. Price is USD$40 equivelent of in our currency.

I'll ask if they have a part number and get back to you within the week. It's a three day holiday here at the moment and every where is shut untill Tuesday.

I removed mine totally about a year ago as it was just falling to pieces. I've not noticed any change in how hot the engine gets or any increased engine noise or anything like that.

Hi,

The engine woud run somewhat louder and somewhat COLDER. The insulation reduces heat transfer, so the hotter area (under bonnet) stays hotter. It is also acoustic absorption to reduce reverberant level buildup under the bonnet.

The V8 shouldn't be too bad noise wise, providfed that your mufflers work fine, so you could take it off without much detriment. If however you want to replace the lining, there is a range of materials you could use, depending on how neat you want and how much money you're prepared to spend.

If you want cheap and nasty, go for perforated foil faced rockwool (or potentially even glass fibr)e - the foil facing will protect from physical damage, and perf will allow sound transparency. Whatever you do, don't get polyester batting as its likely to go up in flames. Rockwool is very heat proof, and I'm pretty sure glass fibre is OK as well (check product data sheets tho)

If you want fancy, go with something like Pyrotek Sorberflex or similar, which is a sheet of loaded vinyl covered with absorptive lining on one side - it helps with both transmission through the bonnet and absorption of noise in the engine bay.

I'd probably go for cheap and nasty in the D1 as the V8 not too bad noise wise. If it was an isuzu, that would be a different story.

Since no-one has said the engine is significantly louder, I will remove the lining and see how it goes.

The paint on my bonnet is pretty cactus anyway so the extra heat shouldn't do diddly, and better heat transfer through the bonnet could be a positive side effect.

I'll try and get to it this weekend after I replace the aircon bearing.
