what to do about this (rusting cargo area floor)

I was laying some rubber matting in the rear cargo area of my D1 ES when I pulled up some plastic trim to find this, along with a bunch of ants and ant eggs. How worried should I be, what should I do about it, and how soon should I do it? In the meantime I gave it a coat of WD40 and replaced the trim to keep the air out. If anyone noticed the previous thread I created you'd find out what most likely caused this...a leaking alpine window, which I have since fixed with silicone.

    Any advice appreciated chaps.

Not good - I'd be lifting up the carpet and sponge rubber and making sure all is dry under there.

Cause could have been the alpine windows or could be leaking via the roof gutters too ( where the joins are at the corners. )

I've just been through the same problem, i striped the whole interia and dried out the black underlay than ground down the rust and rust converted it a few times than gave it 2-3 coats of x-trol.

I prized up the end of the floor to get as much rust stuff in as possible, after that i put some silicone in there than hamered it back down.

after its all cleaned up you should give a coat of kill rust as your primer that will help to stop it coming back or atleast slow it down, also if its rusted like that is it trapping water there and staying wet? id be looking into that aswell

S1 disco boot floor changes are very common on UK based cars.

err, the silicone fix on the alpine windows may also induce rust if it is acetic cure silicone.

I have had this problem recently with my D1. I think you should lift the whole carpet, from back to the front be prepared to be shocked as probably won't be pretty. If their is rust in there as well i'd replace the whole floor. What i did with mine was wire brushed it back to bare metal where practical then treated the whole floor with rust converter several times. there were a couple of places that had gone right through the metal i had them cut out replaced. i then sprayed the whole floor with a rubber spray to seal it. The next trick was to find where the water was getting in. This turned out to be the alpline windows and rear side window seals. For this i sent it back to the panel beaters and let them replace trhe seals and do a couple of other things.
The question you need to ask your self is the car worth saving.

Anyone got a rough figure of how much this is going to cost me to fix? Depending on how bad it is obviously. If what I found is all that there is, I could do most of the work myself. Grind it back to bare metal, grind out some of the deeper spots, treat it, and paint it.

This has really thrown a spanner into the works.

Yeah just grind it back and give it a coat of rust converter then some sort of rust sealent
If it doesn't work it will certainly slow it down
