I dont know why you say that, my tdi auto will leave you at the lights trying to find 2nd gear.

Well yes i did own a Tdi manual and ive driven the auto versions , ill just say id rather the manual and i did state in my opinion
Id rather cross a busy highway with a Tdi manual and make it across safely
How many guy,s on this forum have complained that they have to put their Tdi autos in low range to get up steep driveways where as the manuals can get up with out having to go to low range
By the way i own a chipped Td5 now do you still want a drag from the lights

I have to put my Tdi Man in Low range to drive out or reverse out of my drive way , it will struggle even then all I'm doing is burning the Clutch.

I have driven my father ex- tdi manual and I have 2 tdi autos. Depends on driving style and preference really. I noticed that in low range the manual in 1st gear is much better, but driving the auto in the bush over rocks etc is much smoother, easier on the drive train, dont have to worry about riding the clutch etc (thats why comp vehicles are autos).

So, I would like a manual because I like to play with the gears, but thats all. I am happy with the auto as well.

After driving manual range rovers for years I couldn't be happier with my auto tdi. No trouble leaving trafic at the lights and the fuel economy is great, 800+ km per tank. The only time I'd like a manual is off road going backwards down a steep hill. Going forwards down steep hills is a feet off the pedals affair.

I've had both, and while I love driving the manual, I would have preferred and would replace the current vehicle with an auto if I could. I think the auto was better off road, and definitely better on road. The auto allowed the turbo to stay on boost, where the manual is a slug until the turbo kicks in. Rangieman seemed to have a problem with the auto and acceleration, in my experience it has been the other way around!

The 300Tdi Auto Disco was our first LR, a 1995 model, we owned it from 1999 to 2002, when I sold it because I had purchased a Td5 Disco. I bought a 1997 300Tdi manual in the middle of this year (Replacing a V8i Disco I wrote off in a silly little accident which I had had for 4 years)

x2. I chucked a lethal U turn on Kings way, floored the auto and put the bastard sideways.

Though in hindsight I wished I'd kept both Discos, some days manual would take my fancy

I know the auto wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding but it sure is nicer to "tour" around in - go the slush box
johnd (I may be biased - I have one)

Mine isnt a good example Chris and neither is Sschmez's as mine got a stuffed sprag that slips at in opertune moments as well as the torque converter could use a refresh after 300,000kms and Stevo's was a slug when I drove it, probably due to the massive amount of gear he had in it that day.

When set up right the auto is much quicker to spool up than the manual as the TC should be set up to have coupling at around 1500 rpm (rather than about 1800 like mine these days) and if the kick down is set right then they change at the right loads on hills.

Ive drive a few of both and I like both but with a trailer on I would go the auto as the manual struggles off the line sometimes to get up to turbo spool speed and if you slip the clutch to get ther then when you hit boost you take chunks off your clutch but other than that there is no other real draw back other than needing that antiquated left pedal

I have never needed low range to get up a steep driveway.

I do though use it for backing big trailers and climbing spoon drains or when I go off road but thats what it's there for.

From a standing start you have a better chance at getting ging up a steep hill in an auto (which is working properly) any day.

By the way, I'll give you a drag.....Ive got a chain in the shed

Just think of how much that dual mass flywheel and clutch is worth Chris.....I could nearly replace my auto for what it costs in parts to replace a TD5 clutch ....but Im really not picking, I'd own one if I could
