Check the connection on the back of the alternator to start with.
I was just wondering isd anyone knows why this seems to be happening........ When i bought the car about 4 months ago the tacho seemed to be going crazy you would be driving along and the tacho would just be bouncing up and down all the time not showing a clear reading. Since i got the car back from a clutch change the tacho is dead.
I know that its probably just a coincident that the tacho died at the same time as the clutch but was wondering if anyone has had there tacho die and how they fixed it?
Any help would be helpful
Sam

I have the same problem, when i got the disco it was fine then it started jumping then nothing...and now every now and then it comes back to life, also the other day i looked down to see my speedo was also dead it came back after a short moment.
Typical Land Rover electrics!
Ditto on the Alternator, check the connections, on the disco the tacho picks up the rpm from the phases, if the connection is fine, it may be a sign your alternator is going
Mine has been doing that for the last 2 years some days its fine then it seems to fly up like I am riding a 2 stroke bike and then it dies. Have checked wires seems ok. Local rover dealer wanted to put on a new alternator two years ago not to try but as there solution to the problem. But I said no as the battery has never given a problem and when i put the Volt meter on all is charging and when lights are turned on its still giving correct charge so alternator is fine and it still is today.
Have been told a wire could be cracked internaly near alternater and when working its touching and when ertratic its got a gap.have not checked this yet.
Had same problem. Connector at Alt looked ok. But I cut the wire and replaced the whole spade connector and never had a problem since. Think the wire had fatiged loose/broken inside the old spade connector.
Alternator connection like all the others said mine did it while away i had a heart attck that the alternator was dieing but had a look and all it turned out to be was the spade connection that plugs into the back havnt had a problem since.
Ralph.
As above, clean the male spade connector and nip the female closed slightly with a pair of long nose pliers- i suspected my alt was on its way out but did this and 2 years later no problems.
