I've got a '97 model and it does the same. AFAIK its just a combination of all the backlash in the drivetrain and nothing to be concerned about.

Cant help you with any suggestions for a temp gauge - although I'm sure its possible.
Will you be doing any heavy towing or sand driving that you expect will give the transmission a hard time?

I have 95 300tdi with mods and my gearbox gets hot, i have installed a electronic temp sender to sump of gearbox, and digital thermistors in and out of aftermarket(very large) cooler. If you give it a hard time in sand or towing, very likely will overheat. monitoring is always good idea. You do need to remove gearbox sump to fit a sender.

    Jeep_boy ...

the clunking will happen when going forward or reverse ...
Stick it in reverse drive it slowly backwards and then just before stopping .. put in neutral .. stop ... then put it in reverse again // It will go clunk

This is driveline backlash ... as SteveG said .... Just means that you have a few K's on it

But do get underneath the car with the front & rear wheels lifted on some jacks ... hand brake off // gearbox in neutral // ON FLAT ground ... and check the uni joints .... Make sure you turn the propshafts around while checking

Because of the condition that you got this car in .... The first thing I would be in a BIG hurry to do is stick in a Heavy Duty radiator .... AS your current one is highly probably & mostly blocked in the cores .. as I highly doubt that it has been serviced
