D1 ABS reset without a PC?

Hi Gurus (Gurii?) of LR electricery,

The only electronics problems we're yet had with our '97 D1A has been the ABS fault light. Once after replacing the brake lamp switch (fell apart internally) and once after an indicator lamp holder fault blew the brake/indicator circuit fuse several times before being found and fixed.

Both times we’ve had to find a place with Testbook or similar to reset the fault code and restore ABS functionality and this can take some time and cost an inordinate amount of money when away from the main stream.

Like $90 to those incompetent thieves at the (former?) LR Stealership in Darwin a couple of years ago! This after having to tow a 2.2 tonne caravan from inland Qld to Darwin over the period of several months and short jobs with the ABS disabled. (Yes, I know most of us survived before ABS was invented but it's annoying to know you have it (& it just might save your life) but can't get it to work for months & 1000s of km because of the lack of a simple reset command)

So, dear Gurii, has anyone yet sussed an ABS Fault code reset procedure that can be done without a PC and diagnostic software? You know, one of those "ignition on/off sequences while operating the rear passenger side door lock with you big toe" thingos? On more seriously, perhaps a sequence of shorting pins on the ODBII connector? (Or perhaps anyone with the equipment, time and inclination to capture the bit pattern sent on a 'reset' command, to see if it might be feasible??)

Then again, with the resources of this specialised forum, I guess it shouldn't be too hard to find someone with the software in most parts of the country these days?

I had a 97 D1 and this was the only issue I really had with the vehicle. There's a few other things you can check if it is continually coming on:
wiring to the sensor (at the sensor) - it can break/wear/kink
dust and pitting of the sensor - bauxite dust played havoc with them
ABS warning relay may be faulty - under passenger kick panel from memory.

Fortunately there was still a service agent (LRA did have these up until 2003) in town and they would get Testbook sent in every few months. As you would be aware once the Wabco system has a fault, it won't self clear.

Anyway that doesn't help with the clearing. Blackbox Solutions (Faultmate/Rovacom) will do it but cost $'s for something like that. The D1 is a Waebco C ABS unit. Other than that I don't know of any options. There's no wiring solution I'm aware of as you need to clear the faults from the ECU's memory.

Thanks for your reply. Touch wood (he says, clutching his head...) the ABS itself has been completely trouble-free to date from wheel sensor failures, etc, etc. Just these two 'fault' occurances, which I was able to diagnose and correct without drama - except for resetting the bl**dy fault light!

Might pay to check the warning light relay operation then. I don't have the wiring information handy, but I think its a green relay can under passengers side near the blower fan.
