    What would you do?

My 91 Disco has clicked over 335,000 recently. It's still running relatively strong. Since I've had it, around 3 years, I've replaced the Steering Box, Power Steering Pump, Water Pump, Head Gaskets, Clutch (around 3 years ago).

It is now leaking again from what looks like the Rear Main Seal, and the gearbox makes some odd noises, though this seems to have quietened off a bit recently and also has a bit of shudder especially in 5th. I'm expecting something to go wrong with it sooner or later.

Now here is the big question. I'm planning on keeping the car and don't mind spending money on it. Just as long as SWMBO doesn't find out exactly how much, I'm safe. I've always like the idea of upgrading to the 4.6 V8, and realise that if I go this option I would also have to change the gearbox/transfer case.

I've also started thinking recently that putting a TD5 in it would also be a good idea. You can pick these up relatively cheap now, along with gearbox/transfer case etc. I recently saw one with 150k for $4500.

Now the third option I thought about today is it worth all the hassles. Would I be better off going out and buying a slightly later model Disco with a 300TDI and then changing over my Diffs/Axles/Suspension etc?

Quite the conundrum? What do you think would be the pro's and con's of each of these ideas?

Always a tough decision, but it looks as though you've already spent quite a bit on the existing engine, most of which would more than likely be lost if you changed to a 4.6, if the rear main can be replaced by removing the gearbox which by the sounds of it needs replacing anyway, then you could combine both jobs and be cheaper in the long run. unless of course you do the work yourself then its just a time factor.

Are you happy with the car besides the oil leak and gearbox?

    Yeah I love the car.

The biggest thing I'm concerned about with buying a new one, is what problems it may have. Where as if I spend similar money fitting a new V8 or newish Diesel, then the other niggling problems that aren't normally immediatatly apparent with buying a used car won't affect me.

you're in the same world as i am in, the car as a whole is worth very little and there are others out there that are definatly cheap as the fuel prices go up disco v8's go down.
like you i have spent a bit to keep the car i like [and need- for work] going, it does seem silly to spend 1/2 the current value on an auto gearbox rebuild, but if i didn't i would have a totally worthless thing to sell and be paying off something else that still needs some work . i will stick with what i have, and when my engine gets sick i will just get a replacement as converting to another is just asking for trouble.
