    I'm new to the Forum

    hi Guys

I'm new to the Forum and I thought I'd just pop in and say hi.

I've just bought a '98 Discovery TDI auto in really good nick, 160,000 Km's and very clean.

I used to own a 73 Rangie years back and drove that up the Territory through some of the most inhospitable country and it's performance was legendary, so I'm hoping for something as good from the Discovery.

The only problem I have is with the Discovery is an inability to go into Low Range. It will pop into high range centre diff lock but be buggered if I can get it into Low Range.

I might be doing something wrong but I can't figure out what that might be??
Anyway, I'm sure it's nothing much, maybe just a new transfer case!!

Here's hoping I don't have to build a new one of them!

Probably not the T Case- just linkages and lack of use.
Try a search on the old threads for a few clues.

Oh and welcome ..sounds like you've got a nice vehicle there ...similar K's to my 1997 TDi .
    ...put a pic up.

    Nice.
Give it a 2" lift, take off the sidesteps and it'll take you anywhere.

    Welcome
Thats the best looking d1 i've seen in a while!!!!
My lowrange can be hard sometimes
all i do to get it in is put the car in to first gear, try push the lever into low range and hold it there, then slowly let the clutch out, works every time
To bad yours is an auto
The good news is it looks like it hasn't been driven off road much!!!

Welcome mate . Very tidy disco you have there . My disco was very hard to get into low range from lack of use . I cleaned up the linkages and now i can get low range easy . But i still have to do what Tim suggested and slowly take off for it to pop in .

    Thanks for the welcome guys!

Plans?? Well, me and the Mrs used to live up in Gove NT for 10 years and we bloodywell miss the NT, so we may try and get up there for the dry season for a few months.
With the car, I want to lift the suspension actually. But I am not after heavier suspension for towing, I am after a softer ride!! My old rangie had the best ride I've ever had and I'd like to try and recapture that. from memory it had gas shocks and lifted springs, but which type and how high I don't remember.
I am definitely open for advice on this subject.
Secondly, I am now removing the centre console to check out the linkages, how do you adjust the handbrake in these?? I need to to get the console out.

This is the 1st auto I've ever owned and although it's really smooth, it is taking me some adjusting that's for sure.

Thanks for any advice and help in advance

Yea, the linkage pin is missing altogether.
I was able to change it into low range just by lining the linkage up with no pin, so it should be fine

    Welcom to the forums.
    Nice looking Disco!

As mentioned previously, defo get rid of those steps though.
My D2 had what look like exactly the same steps, and they didn't last 2 mins on the tracks. They got partially ripped off in use (on my first trip out), and then finally unbolted a little further down the track with the help of friendly Landy owners!
One of the best things I did - much more clearance.

They really are useless and not up to the job of better quality steps/sliders. Just for aesthetics for the shopping trips!

    Cheers,

You're probably right, I have never had them before and I hav'nt been off road yet.

The thing is they don't help in any way getting into or out of the vehicle,so they are just for show for sure.

Do you have any opinions spring wise or shocks concerning lifting it??????

As I said before I am after a soft ride more than beefing it up to tow caravans
