    Disco Tdi 96 serpentine belt noise again.

    Hi all still haveing problems with my belt changed the belt the tensioner and cleaned all the pulley grooves out spun alternator no noise or tightness and spun everything else I could reach and found no unusual noise or resistance but there is still this constant squeek evenly spaced apart

    When I watch the engine I noticed the tensioner moving up and down as in jumping when the engine fires with each cylinder (my opinion) but the tensioner does not stay still what bothers me the most is the noise what else is there to do to get rid of it, I have also tried belt grip and chalk powder but what seems to work the best is CRC spray but it only last a couple of minutes this problem is rerally getting on my nerves.

    any help would be appreciated as I hope someone esle has had this problem.

    Is the belt tensioner seating flat on the base?
    When you used the spray, in which spot you sprayed to stop the noise?
    Is the belt in full contact with the surface of the tensioner?
    How much tension you have applied to the belt?

    The serpentine belt has an automatic tensioner, so unlikely to be tension related.

    Some brands of belt have been known to make noise compared to others. I use the Dayco ones, and they seem good and quiet.

    Are you sure it is the sepentine belt and not the other belt (aircon one).

    It may not be the belt, it could be any one of the bearings. The water pump may also have a shot bearing. Remove the tension in the belt, and see if the water pump bearing has any play in it. Mine did and I replaced the water pump, which in turn removed the squeaking I had.

    Replacing the aircon belt also removed squeaking I had, which was due to the belt being old and hard.

    Forgot to add, the serpentine belt tensioner on my D1 300Tdi also jumps up and down a fair bit, I think that is normal.

    Mine had started squeaking and have tried talc trick but when the belt got wet it started again. Have also tried belt grip and this lasted and then seemed to make it worse as it held dirt.
    I sprayed So easy tyre cleaner onto it while engine running and it stoped straight away waited a while and sprayed again turned off engine and then let sit overnight and have not had a problem for a while. Had read on previous post that when the belt gets dirty it squeaks so i thought i would try the tyre cleaner and it seems to work quite well. Have done this over the last two years with no apparent Ill affect or slipage of belt. I feel the cleaner seems to clean the groves. When the noise appears I spray wait a while and give spray again and then shut down leave overnight.

    tdi serpentine belt

    Sorry forgot to add that i ran the car with the belt off and no noise so it has to be serpentine belt related or auxillary related.

    Spray was applied at water pump on the edge of belt seems to take longer to work if sprayed directly ontop of it and yes belt grip makes the noise worse.

    I wish they had a v belt conversion for the damn thing.

    I had a similar prob to this and found a solution which may help - but looks like you may have tried this.

    I had a really annoying chirp getting worse and worse, and i used wd40 intermittently to reduce the noise but every 12 months the belt would snap or fray its edges. It all started when I had the water pump replaced, i think they put in a non genuine cover on it and it was slightly larger which pushed the tensioner out by 2mm. I had the cover replaced with a genuine part, and also replaced the tensioner pulley and never heard the noise ever again - and belt has not frayed or snapped in over 18 months now!

    There are a few threads on here already and a search would probably be your best friend in this case but:

    -Cleaning out the grooves on the pulleys with a wire brush can help
    -The brand of belt is important, I have a gates on mine at the moment and it's noisey as hell and Im pretty sure the grooves are slightly different size to the Dayco belts.
    -A bit of WD40, CRC or the like will shut it up for a while but will cause corrotion to the belt and shorten it's life but if it's noisey, I dont think you will be worried about how long it will last.
    -Cracked belts hold more dust so those that have noisey belts which are pretty old, chuck a new Dayco on.

    Yes - just been through all of this.

    * Changed bearing in tensioner - no change
    * Changed belt to different brand - no change
    * Water or CRC on back of belt would help for a few minutes

    Changed the Dayco tensioner assembly (15minute job) and squeak has gone

    tdi belt serpentine

    looks like only thing left is to try another belt.

    I really do wish they had v-belts!!!
