    Re canning

Just read this older post, thought I would reply anyway. I went up the canning from south to north 14/15 months ago in my D1 300TDI Auto. It is a bog standard vehicle, I took the rear seats out and made a set of cupboards/shelves for the rear. On board I carried 80 litres of diesel and 40 litres of water. I fitted a roof rack and carried a second spare, 20 Litres of diesel and 20 litres of water along with spare header tank, fuel lift pump and water pump. I fitted a set of std height heavy duty springs (which actually lifted the empty vehicle about 40mm), and a long ranger fuel tank 125 approx litres capacity. The tank was supposed to be 135 litres but I could only squeeze 125 in from installation. Had a fantastic trip, no punctures, only two problems, neither of which stopped us (for long). I split the long ranger where the rear mounting plates are welded on to the tank (luckily near the end of trip so just kept fuel level low) and slight cracking of centre roof pillars at junction to roof, rover parts rewelded this for me in about 10 mins. Fuel consumption was brilliant, with the larger tank and what I had on board I could have nearly done the whole trip, however I did buy 60 litres at Kunnarwaritchi (cant remember how to spell it), most of which I still had at the end of trip at Halls Creek. I realise you said D2, but this may be of some help.

P.S. Came across a D2 td5 stuck as a result of oil in the loom damaging the computer. This was a long story, but they did eventually get out and had the vehicle repaired, at huge expense and much hard work from some very caring and dedicated fellow travelers. Not the ones that were actually traveling with the landy, they shot through and left them!!

    I remember that incident...

I even offered to drive over there and fix their vehicle on track, and / or tow them out for only my costs (fuel, food, parts)

The people who left them need to be shot!

Its a shame that no-one knew that the ecu connector and possibly a couple of other connectors would only have needed to be cleaned, perhaps scrubbed with some hot soapy water or metho, then the vehicle driven out.

Just thought I would clarify a few things on this issue, as I know the parties involved. The disco in question was bought by the owner a couple of months before the trip and was setup at the last minute. The owner had never done any outback touring before and little 4wding.

He was informed about the potential issues with a disco and was advised to replace the loom and other parts on the vehicle as preventative maintenance before such a big trip. This wasnt done. Indeed even before getting onto the CSR the disco was showing multiple warning lights but this was ignored. I would have not commenced the trip if you had warning lights...

When the vehicle stopped, the people traveling with them spent 3 days trying to get the vehicle started including many calls via satellite to 3 different land rover mechanics. Unfortunately the loom wasnt suggested as a candidate as it was thought it was a fuel issue. The disco was the only land rover in the group. It was suggested to the owners that they be taken back to where the fuel dump was and out to a settlement where a recovery could be organised. The people refused to leave the vehicle as they thought it was get vandalised Towing the vehicle was tried but the parties found it too difficult.

Eventually a recovery was organised but the 4wd truck didnt make it in as tit blew all its tyres. I understand they were helped out eventually by some people passing in GU Patrol utes that managed to tow them out.

I agree that the other people shouldnt have left, but I am sure they regret that decision now. But there were other factors between the parties such as personal disagreements that led to the decision though.

I think what should be learnt by the whole unfortunate debacle is dont travel with new people on such a big trip, only travel with people that have a well sorted and tested vehicle...and dont leave people behind.

Sorry for hijacking your thread. If you have a well tested and sorted D2 with long range tanks there is no reason to do the CSR. I fully ntend on doing it in mine...dont let this story discourage you.

The only thing I think you may have issue with is load carrying. Airbags would be a very good idea...and pack light.

Gday All, I have every intention of still going, its always good to hear the bad as well as the good. There will be just Dad and me, and I have polyairs fitted with heavy duty O.M.E springs and bilstien shocks so Im comfortable with the suspension, and have plenty of time to go thru the car as we are going in june 2010.
The oil in the harness seems to catch out plenty of people.Am fitting a longrange tank in june. Its more what spares(apart from the hoses, oils etc)that people found they took/needed and what sort of fuel people carried that would be interesting to know.At the moment there is just us going so need to be extra prepared.
I have a Trakshak camper trailer but with just 2 think i'll leave that at home.
    Thanks and Cheers Ean

It was a long time ago but I have driven the Canning in a 200 Tdi disco. There was only 2 in the car, so we were able to fit everything inside including a second spare.
I had sill tanks fitted so could carry 180l underneath.
I removed the rear seats and built a false floor between the cargo barrier and the fromt seats. The second spare was strapped upright to the cargo barrier.
I don't use a roofrack so the car didn't get the stress fractures in the A & B pillars that disco's can get.
We did break a rear shock absorber and would suggest that you at least carry a rear spare one.

    Regards
