    Running cool

    Hi,

This may be a strange problem but my '94 3.9i V8 Auto is running a lot cooler than it should be. The mechanic I use removed the thermostat as i'd been having overheating probs. I had the rad completely cleaned and he removed the stst when he refitted the rad. We recently did a desert trip and early in the mornings my guage would hardly climb in to the normal range.
My question is does running colder than normal affect fuel consumption? My thinking is that an engine is designed to run at a certain temp giving the best fuel consumption and running it cooler than "normal" will alter/increase consumption.
Could one of you experts give me a good arguement that I can use to convince my mechanic to put a thermostat back in.

    Simon

Engine would be running quite cool if the thermostat was removed completely. Can you install a cooler one than you originally had in it?

Running without a thermostat and the engine always running cool will cause a significant increase in fuel consumption - some suggest anywhere up to half as much fuel again or even more.

You will also have less power.

As boxer said, a cooler one might be a worthwhile compromise, although I'd be more interested in finding out why it was running hot in the first place. I'm also a little curious as to why any mechanic would think running the vehicle long term without a thermostat would be a good idea...

You can get "high flow" thermostats, running without one can cause engine wear, it is not good for an engine to run under operating temp.

    Running cool

    sean087,

It was running hot as the rad was clogged up, we fixed that and he thought he would help by removing the thermostat.
He's Egyptian although Landrover trained and it's one of the first things they do here to hel cool overheating engines.

i wouldent be removing the thermostat they are there for a reason there not like the plastic front bumper that is just ugly, they serve a purpose and if the car is running hot its for a reason, removing the thermostat isnt the appropriate fix, i would be putting the right temp one back in, if its still running warm find out why, is the water pump not performing, i know some have trouble with the v8's overheating, not a rover i know but my jeep used to run 35's and on hot days up the beach ect it would get warm, i fixed this but raising the rear of the bonnet a bit which helped a lot, it used to run a 82c thermostat i put a 71c in and it usually ran around 8oc watertemp in winter and in summer it would sometimes hit 90c and on the beach it would sometime go up to 100c 80c was prob a bit low but it the only way to stop overheating due to the tire size

yep thats all well and good,,

    but his sand,,

is a bit different to the stuff you were on---

Put a cooler thermastat back in,
    run original viscous fan,
    use a water wetter product,
buy a proper temp guage.(the dash one will only move AFTER you're in trouble)

Not only will it use more fuel because it is running rich, but the excess fuel apparently can dilute the oil on the cylinder walls, causing premature piston-ring wear.

Get it replaced as soon as possible with the recommended one. Here's hoping that he really did replace the radiator - this is an old dodge to make it look like it has been

It won't overheat with the standard cooling system, if everything is in top order,

    Cheers Charlie

I'm Not sure if this applies to earlier D1's, the ECM relies on engine temp inputs for operating correctly. If the engine doesn't reach operating temp range, the ECM may remain in a warm-up mode. This is possibly why fuel consumption increases - as discussed earlier in this thread.

Jeep Boy, The rad was properly cleaned, both ends taken of and fully rodded so i've no worries there, he seemed to think that it would help to remove the stst as well.
