Is there extra oil in the gearbox??
The oil could be transfering, probably doesn't do that in the disco's, but it does in the lt95
TIM.
Hey all
I have a 98 disco TDi
It seams to be leaking oil at a rapid pace from the transfer case
It hasn't lost any from the gearbox
Where is it likely to be leaking from???
Is this common? i had heard they do leak under there but this is excessive
While im on the subject
What oil should be run in Gearbox and transfer?
Any help will be apreciated as im supposed to be going down south for the long weekend
Cheers
Jadan

if im rite on reading it,, it sounds like the back to back seals have gone,
oils,, well depends on how much u wana spend,, i use
TC- maltitrax same as in your diffs,
GB- i think its sintrans??? or is it sintrax
Thanks guys
i dont think its a oil transfering prob but the back to back seal could be it from looking at it
Im guesing this would require spliting the transferr off the gearbox to do the seal???
Is this a straight foreward job, as in pull out swap the seal and re-fit? or is there something tricky i should look out for???

The interbox (back to back) seals are a fairly straight forward job but make sure it is these that are leaking.
Give the transfer case a good wash down & then see where it's leaking from after a drive. If you're losing that much oil, it can't be too hard to find the source.
Also replace the O ring on the intermediate shaft if you do the interbox seals too. Getting the transfer case back onto the gearbox can be tricky & most here use headless bolts to make sure it's all lined up correctly. Get this part wrong & it's ever so easy to stuff up your new seal.

I have had a real good look and its leaking from where i guess the intermediate shaft with the O-Ring is on i have been told it needs pulling down and machining the housing where the o-ring runs and puting a steel sleeve in
This requires a full rebuild.
$1500 to fix
Any where in perth wa who does this sort of thing and might be cheaper???
