D1 300tdi a struggle to start in the morning.

    hey all,

lately in the mornings when i go to start my d1 300tdi she struggles to start. now i'm thinking glow plugs???? later when she is hot theres no problem. i have changed all filters, oil and coolants recently. can any1 confirm it for me and whats the best outcome, new glow plugs or can they be cleaned??

    cheers simon.

Glow plugs are rarely needed on the 300tdi due to direct injection and our warm temp's compared to europe. Only trouble i ever had with mind not starting was on a minus 6 morning in the alps. In that case it was more the diesel i think. I would be more looking at the thermo wax block in the pump. Does it start easier with your foot on the accelerator? Or does the tdi go to max fuel when rpm is below 200rpm. Definately sounds like you need a rave disc still. Stu

Yeah the 300Tdi should start no probs without glow plugs. I'm from Ballarat and mine starts easy with out the plugs at 4am (as they are disconnected from a melted fusible link). Does it turn over slow? If so then, How good is the battery? How's the starter?. Check the earth to chassis connections and battery connections. The starter solenoid switch could be on the way out, they have to pass alot of current and the contacts erode.

Check the injector pump timing. This will make them hard to start in the morning when cold, and gutless as anything when cold. The other giveaway is that they are very quiet, and have very little diesel knock.

A quiet Tdi has retarded pump timing
