Thread: Shudder/vibration through car at 100km +

i have a 2" on my disco I have the same thing 100kph.....although I didn't always have it
I also have an RTC and my'n still does it. how ever my tyres are quite worn and have not wron evenly which could suggest a number of things including pressures, balance etc etc.......I have no rotaflex and new bushses on radius arms and trailing arms...and new wheel bearings allround.

i'm having new wheels and tyres fitted either next week or hopefully the week after.

If the vibs are still there then I have to start looking deeper....i have to say though it very much depends on the road surface as sometimes they are not there at all and other times bad enough it vibrates hard through the steering wheel

Ricky/Uniball I would say swivel bearing preload... Steelnerve I would maybe look at engine/gearbox mountings but I am less sure of that!

Thankyou for all your replies.

The car has standard suspension set-up. No lift.

After several trips back to the shop we're almost there. Found that the steering wheel shudder and vibration were two different problems:

Steering wheel Shudder over bumps:

- Swivel bearing pre-load - 50% improvement
- New Bilstein Steering Damper - Shudder gone

Vibration:

- Wheel balance - 30% improvement
- Rear tail shaft coupling replaced - Vibration almost completely gone.

My tyres 70% worn and I suspect when they're replaced (after I take out a third mortgage), that the little vibration that is still there will disappear.

After doing the 4 things listed above - she's a different car

*UPDATE*


I had that horrible shudder/ bullriding problem also.....

Replaced bushes and did allsorts....(96tdi man)

FINALLY checked the wheel bearings (easy job to do)

and the rear bearing locking nuts (on BOTH sides) were as loose as ten loose things !!

Retensioned them (until the bearing fairy pays me a visit) and OMG...

The change is incredible.

Months of time and effort wasted for NOT properly checking such a basic procedure....

Remember....jack it up and check them the right way..........
