The factory alloy wheel nuts can be used on the factory steel wheels.
If you take a wheel nut off you will see the alloy nut has the taper for the steel wheel.
I've got alloy wheels on my 97 D1, but the spare is steel.
Just after confirmation that I can use the alloy nuts on the steel wheel if I have to fit the spare.

Same car,Landrover being cheap again..
Good news, I had no probs with this situation.
Cheers Dean.
Thanks guys.
Was pretty sure it was OK but its great to have confirmation.

While I'm asking, the other aspect of the equation is do the steel type nuts that are on the spare fit to hold a alloy wheel on the carrier?
no, the spare wheel nuts if the steel type will not hold the alloy wheel.
IF they are like the nuts that come factory on a disco 1 they also wont hold a steel wheel on the normal hub studs as they are not the same strength.
I strongly suggest replacing them with the appropriate nuts (alloy multi purpose ones ideally)

Unfortunately the spare wheel ones are the short steel ones.
I just took one off and tried on an alloy wheel (still on axle) and it only goes on about 2 threads before its tight on the alloy. Assuming the spare wheel carrier has similar length studs then there wont be much to hold it on.
I need to have a decent look at when I can actually swap the wheels and see what happens.
Worst case I can use 2 steel nuts off the spare carrier, and take 2 alloy nuts to fit the alloy wheel back on the carrier.
