    D1 ticking noise when in drive (3.9 auto)

    I'm hoping this noise could still be coming from an exhaust gasket somewhere as most people have discovered, but being that I'm fairly sure it only occurs while the transmission is engaged, I assume it's something more sinister. Especially as I only noticed it after admittedly giving the Disco a flogging after getting bogged last weekend (enough to get the tyres smoking in clay mud ).

    It's a light ticking noise that increases with the rpms and is audible up to about 40km/h. Whether it goes away at this speed or is drowned out by engine/road noise I'm unsure. I changed the transfer case oil last night and while there were a few small metal shavings stuck to the drain plug, it wasn't as bad as I expected and the oil was still reasonably clear. I'll check the propshaft bolts this morning but any advice in the meantime would be greatly appreciated.

    ... I have the same affliction .... It will be the exhaust manifold bolts coming loose on the head ..... Grab a small socket set and give them a nip up

    You will most probably be doing this on a regular basis

    Does yours make noise in park/neutral, or just while the transmission is engaged?

    Starts quite / normal .... Put the transmission in engaged and drive .... Put your foot down to go and you can hear the ticking .... The sound comes from low in the cabin on your front passenger side


    Give those exhaust bolts a nip .... 10 minutes work

    I'll give it a go mate. Just had a quick look before I shoot off to work and noticed the passenger side bolts have a metal sheet underneath them with tabs that fold up over the bolt. The drivers side doesn't have these so I gave them a little torquing. Some of them were quite loose. Didn't have a chance to drive it yet. I can't see how the passenger side manifold bolts would come loose with that plate in place but I guess I'll pry the tabs away and nip the bolts up tight after work.

    Will let you know how I go. Cheers.

    Turned out to be the gasket between the manifold and the collector/lower section of exhaust, just in case anyone else has the same problem.

    i had a similar problem with my 200 tdi it turned out to be the main pully bolt was loose

    cable rattling sound wile on the highway

    i had a strange loud noise on the highway sounded like a cable flapping inside the dash, it turned out to be the transmition filler pipe came lose and was rattling against the fire wall. luckaly it has not cought on fire yet.

    Just had the exact same thing on my '97. Sounded like a loose tappet. Sound was present when in neutral as well. Turned out it was a tiny hole in exhaust manifold gasket.

    Aint this the truth,,,

    Is there a way of fixing this on a permanent basis??
