    D1 steering wheel

    hey fellas,

been slowly reading through here to get a feel from my new purchase... '97 TDi D1 so thought it was bout time i opened my mouth and said hi.

Love my little disco, purrs like a kitten and was in mint condition from the old fella who had it before me, so i was impressed with the find. The only fault thats more an annoyance, is the size of the steering wheel.

I was wondering if anyone has opinions or suggestions this. Its non-air bag so not a huge issue to change out, but im quite partial in keeping interior looking standard, so i'd rather use a genuine land rover wheel from a dif model. Is this possible? and if so, is it a pain to complete?

    i'd love any assistance.

    cheers
    Al

i find the size od the disco wheel really nice when you get used to it........if you think thats big go sit in a defender they are like tractor wheels

I'm not sure the other models are any smaller.......mmmmmm possibly a freelander may be
Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......

    G'day Al.

I was thinking the same thing a while ago for my D1 - it's got the puke light blue interior and the steering wheel is looking daggy with age ('91 model). Anyway, have a look at some of the UK Land Rover parts suppliers - Craddock, Paddock, ummm I can't think of the others but if you pick up a copy of a UK mag like LR World or Land Rover Owners they're FULL of ads. They've got the right diametre wheel and boss kit so there shouldn't be a problem with it. I've thought a wheel out of a early Range Rover or 110 would look okay but a good one is hard to find....

    Good luck with it mate.

    Matt.

yeah i looked about on google and freelanders really only offered something feasible.. i figured uk suppliers would be the way to roll.. is it as simple as a boss kit install?

Lol, i just bought a 96 D1, and the first mod i did was to change the "bus" steering wheel to a sports steering wheel. The boss kit was $80 inc shipping, but i only got a cheap ****y 320mm sports steering wheel, and it looks like a toy, so I will get a 350mm wheel one day. The other thing i noticed is now it feels like its lost power steering, going from a 410mm (approx) wheel to 320mm wheel its a lot harder to turn hehehe... The boss kit took about 10mins to install, very easy.

Anyway all that info is useless if you want to keep a factory look, i dont know if other LR wheels are the same spline or will fit. Most newer LR's will have airbags too.

I put a air bag style factory steering wheel on a non air bag D1 vehicle ! no probs, will take a bit of modding the wiring for the horn to work, but should be done fairly easy !
