I had the same problem with a Defender In the end i bought the 300TDi because it was in my mind easyer to fix and had alot more toys on it that i would have put on the other one anyway.
But i was more looking at the 99/00 td5 which wern't as good as the 01 TD5. They got alot of the problems Ironed out by then

If we're talking about Discos, then I'd go TD5.

However, if it was a Defender you're looking at then it'd be a tough call.

    Without a doubt the TD5.

    More modern
    More comfort
    More features
    More room
    More power
    More capable offroad
    Less corrosion
    Younger.

The Tdi does use less fuel
    Cheers

    Beyond any doubt a Tdi 300 1998

    More reliable
    More economic
    Easy to fix
    More capable
The choice of the UK army for all the above reasons
It is so capable and powerful that the army have to detune the Defes Tdi300 because the speed and capabilities of it after tune up
Also the choice of the 90% of the African explorers.

I looked at changing to a TD5 from my TDI 300 and have decided to stay with the TDI due to how reliable mine has been and i dont think it can depreciate much more and i will only loose what i spend on her.
This is still less then depreciation on the trade up to D2 td5.
I was close to a change had found two vehicles I liked.
Have latley been looking at D3 upgrade as they are comming down in price but Service costs seem high.
It will come down to personal choice as some love the TDI and others love TD5 while there is growing number who love D3.

But they are all Land Rover of different years

Slunnie, why do you say the td5 is more capable more offroad? I do agree with you as I own one myself, but it would be good hear your opinion on why they are more capable than the D1. Me and a friend have a bit of rivalry going on at the moment, he seams to think a D1 is better since it has the A-frame set up and hence you get more flex.

    Cheers

Hi Hendrik, from what I have looked at and read you can more flex from the rear of a D1 but the fronts limited compared to the rear.
But D1 owners love that rear.
The D2 can have more flex from the front then a D1 and it is more equal to the rear of a D2 so is a more balanced set up.
    Both are good.
Having more flex in D1 does help it and having similar flex front rear in D2 seems to work for it. So it is back to what you like and are comfortable with.
So happy competing with your mate and keep up the picks of your trips will have to come on a run with you two one day.

    cheers Allan

I would of thought it was really due to traction control. Have you owned a D1?
