Are they sure about the piston??? If the head gasket blows in a certain place, it can give HUGE crankase pressure exactly like a broken piston. AND, it isn't necessarily a throwaway either, unless it was an overheat and the pistons are smeared up and down the cylinder walls....
I would get the head off and check thoroughly before condemning the whole unit.
A replacement engine is in the region of at least $3500 for a used one, why NOT remove the head and check??? Of course a reco engine will be about 2 to 3 K more, but I would be checking before chucking! Where are you situated?
