    D1 Front Diff Died.....

    Hi all,

Had dramas last night on the way home.... I was in a hurry to get home and get ready to head out for dinner but my partner decided to play a prank and tell me she had a flat back in town.... So as the good boyfriend I am..... I turn around, off the side of the road in the dirt... turned full lock and took off..... A lovely crack and grinding noise came from the front diff and disappeared after about 5 seconds.
So I started limping home being very gentle and infuriated at my girlfriend for getting me to turn around.

I came to a T-intersection, went to take off and had no drive. The many expletives followed!!!!
I put it into CDL and got home. Got out of the car at home, back out of CDL, put it in first gear and let the clutch go to see that the front prop shaft was spinning very freely........ with some sort of metal rattling around in the diff housing!!!!!!

So today is going to be a day to pull out the shaft and if I am adventurous and/or game enough to look..... the diff haha.

Just thought I would share the agrovating news!!

    Cheers

Yeah thats what I said to my GF, and that if was going to go it would have at anytime

Now I just need to find a replacement. Seeing that your in a relatively close vecinity... where would I find one locally? If I had the money I wouldnt bother replacing it with a standard..... I'd be putting lockers F/R

We have 2 10spline fronts here, but they are both pretty old, still work though, probably not worth puting in but

otherwise just have to look around for a good condition second handy, i would expect a new one to be a bit $$$$

I've had a large amount of backlash for a fair while, over the past 3 or so weeks its been clunking when you take off, so Im not sure that it would be the CV's, but when it gets fixed i'll check them too.

I'ts a 98 D1, do they have the 24 spline? I'll ring around for a second hand one if so.

I agree. The CV is most likely to be the problem given the circumstances when it broke.

Should be good fun, they are top blokes.

I used to work with them in Alice Springs at the LR Dealer there.
I dropped in and stayed a few days in January when we were heading home from Brisbane.
