    Donut gone replaced by vibration

I replaced my rear donut on my D1, rwc failed the donut. I want to do a 2" lift so thought that was the time to replace the donut with uni joints. After doing it I have a big vibration. On over run I have huge vibration and lots of bad noises. Not the uni joints I think. More a scraping noise. I'm about to jack it up and have a look but thought I'd ask first.

no matter how good the rest of the vehicle is,,
a Disco with a donut will always have less vibes than one with a uni.

A spacer needs to be made on some models when changing back to the uni flange. The problem if you don't is that the pinion will NOT tighten up and that could be where the horrific noise is coming from Don't keep driving until it is checked. You shouldn't be able to move the pinion flange up and down at all.

It did seem to screw in a long way. Do you know who makes the spacer or what dimensions they are. Thanks

they usually come out of a 2nd hand diff... but then you need to set the pinion preload if its to be done properly.

as soon as i read this thread the first thing i though of was, bet he forgot the spacer

    cheers phil

AFAIR Phil the later 'donut equipped' D1 and RRC diffs had shims for pinion preload, not crush spacers?

I had the flange and spacer when I changed mine.
about an inch? long, same size as the flange.
goes onto the pinion before you put the 4 bolt fange on.

Would have been nice if British Off Road had mentioned that when I bought the kit. Will go back on tuesday and see if they have one. Thanks for the help. Will be nice to be driving a Land Rover again. The Navara is just not in the same class.

I think it is closer to 10mm deep from memory.

It is just a ring. Nothing fancy. If you had the depth and internal/external diameter you could make it yourself.
A lathe would be nice of course.
