the most obvious sign is it starts leaking diesel or you get diesel coming out of the timing cover wading plug hole.

other signs you need some gear to check for, but assuming you have that stuff then

lower injection pressure (can be checked by doing the upside down injector trick)

wandering injection timing (assuming that its not a loose belt or pully

not holding residual line pressure (usually acompanied by a low injection pressure)

not making full set fuel delivery

    uneven delivery

excessive hunting (especially if its hot and running above idle)

    One more thing to add to Daves list above;

If the vehicle refuses to switch off and the solenoid IS working, check for metal particles holding the stop solenoid plunger off its seat. I have had 2 Tdi's that had this symptom, one at 450k, and one at 390k. Both ended up with pump overhauls as the hardfacing had come off the cam plate due to age, thats where the metal particles came from.

Good pumps these Bosch VE's up to 450k with regular filters

    dave or Justin,

I have had the beast going for a few days now ! report as follows

It seems very hard to start so i'm quite sure my glow plugs are shot !, is there anything to look out for in buying them ?
Its also seems to bucket out white smoke especially when its cold ! not to bad when it warms up, I drove it to work for a good run today (about 40km) it also seems to be running a bit rough ? I will get it back into the diesel injection shop when my mate is back but I thought I'd ask what you thought ?
Over all its not bad !

The power steering is really notchy too ?? I guess there is no way around just getting another box to fix that ?

    Cheers
    Jeremy

Jezz it shouldn't be the glow plugs most people in the uk dont even have them wired up!.....

how ever isn't white smoke linked with buring water.
Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......

Interesting ? SO your saying it may have water in the diesel ? Possible !, I did drain the Diesel when it first would not start then When I found it was not causing the problem after it started i put it back in
I'm also told that when diesel is old you may not tell if it has water in it ?

    Thanks, I'll do that again

white smoke is more likely incomplete combustion or low compression.

its unlikely to be water in the fuel as diesel doesnt absorb all that much and youd solve it by draining the fuel water seperator.

your valve adjustment might be out, or the timing might have slipped (those 3 bolts that hold the pump timing gear on).

is it eating coolant or pressurising the cooling system excessively?

Jezza, what Lou and Dave said. Timing is in need of fine adjustment, do the old lining up of slot and timing pin trick and recheck the base timing. Glow plugs are generally unnecessary with 300Tdi's.
