Well, Dad's gone and done it.................. He's cooked his Internatinal HS2.8 in his Disco.
He was drving up the freeway, from Adelaide back up into the hills, when all of a sudden the temp gauge shot up to near boiling.
He pulled over immediately, let her cool, and topped her up, and had to do this a few times on the way home. Temp gauge would get high, but drop again before it hit red, then climb again, and drop (etc)
Tested the Thermostat, and found it wouldn't open until the water boiled.........not ideal, (also had some of the seal missing, so at least it wasn't completely shut off) so we replaced it. Now we can't get her to hold prime in the cooling system. She just pushes a good portion out the header tank, and then gets an airlock.
We're now assuming it's the head gasket, although the oil is good, nothing from the exhaust, and no compression lock in the cylinders.......... unless, of course, there's something else we're not thinking of.
So, does anybody know............
Do you use a 300TDI head gasket and bolt set on these things?
Or any other suggestions.
Cheers.
Reece.

There are a couple of members here from Brazil, maybe a PM.

Been looking for the link for the Brazilian member, couldn't find them.
But did find this mob -

Not sure if this applies to a 2.8 or is even correct, just an idea, so don't shoot me down.
With my 300TDi, I have found that if I fill through the plug near the thermostat (and with the header tank cap off), when coolant starts coming out the plug the header tank is way overfull. (I assume this happens because the thermostat plug is higher than the header tank.) If I start it now with the header tank cap off, coolant just overflows out and I get an airlock.
What I do now when filling is leave the header tank cap on tight and fill as before through the plug near the thermostat. When the coolant overflows out the filling hole I put the plug back in.
Start the engine and run for a while with the heater on. Stop it and top up to the correct level through the header tank.
Also, make sure you fill very slowly through the plug near the thermostat so that the air has a chance to escape as filling.
As I said at the start, maybe its right maybe its wrong, but worth a try before pulling a head off.
*******UPDATE*******
Well, there may be some good news.
We trucked the Disco down to Hobbo, at Lynda's Land Rovers...... for a measley sum of $85.00
He's run a pressure test on the cooling system, and it's come up perfect.
The engine starts and runs perfectly.
....... but then proceeds to pressurise the cooling system.
His guess is, that the head bolts may just require re-tightening. (and we'll fit an "Engine Saver" at the same time too)
More news tomorrow, after more testing.
I had the same problem with a 300 TDi - your head gasket has let go for sure - don't drive it any distance at all remove the head and replace the gasket. I drove several hundred kms with a trailer hooked up and wrecked the cylinder head when a large percentage of the cooling water was blown out via the header tank cap. The leak was very slow for about 1500 ks before the gasket failed catastrophically. The problem did not show up when the system was pressurised, nor did any significant quantity of exhaust gas show up when the cooling system was tested for exhaust gas.

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈
Thanks Guys.
I'm already in the process of arranging a new gasket (etc). And the vehicle has been transported.
I told Dad it wasn't worth risking, and since it's been sent to a workshop, it should be done properly - first time. No guessing, no fiddling (like the way he killed his Rangie).............. but you know how dads are....
I may end up with a new(ish) Disco yet.......![]()
