    Angry Clutch Problem with Discovery

    Hi Guys,
I am having some serious problems with my 97 Disco 300 TDI.

At the end of last year I managed to destroy an engine when my expansion tank exploded. Sourced a replacement, and while the engine was out I had a new clutch kit put in.

The clutch kit was supplied to me at cost price from a contact up in Sydney, while the work was done by a mechanic in Melbourne.

Now only 4-5 months latter and after no off road driving, the clutch is making a very bad noise/vibration when the clutch gets pressed about 1/2 way down, the noise/vibration continues as it is fully depressed, and then I am able to change gears and the noise/vibration stops when i release the clutch at about the same height it started making the noise. It also happens when just sitting idling in neutral, and depressing the clutch...

The noise does not happen all the time either, the morning after I first noticed it, it was fine... But then i took the car to the mechanic who did the original clutch job and he was able to reproduce it...

He has said that he is pretty sure it is the release/thrust bearing. A part which he claims can not be installed incorrectly, so it must be a faulty part...

I was hoping you guys might be able to give me a bit of advice.. Does this sound correct to you? Do you think I have any chance in getting someone to pay for the labour or am i going to have to wear (again) this cost...?

I know normally I would just send it back to the mechanic and get him to fix it since the work was only 4 months ago. However this situation is different cause I supplied the parts to him…

    Cheers,
    Ed.

I would agree with the mech its more than likely the throw out bearing.

it is possable to put it in incorrectly but you have to be really trying hard to do it and if you do put it in wrong it wont work at all.

there are a couple of little things that can cause problems but these generally point to either an incompetent mechanic whose to heavy with the butchery tools OR dodgey parts.

Have a look at the general overall quality of the rest of his work, if its all good then I would probabley back a factory poorly lubricated bearing thats failed early.

    Thanks Dave,
The mechnic came from recommendations on this site and I am no expert but I have been happy with his work so I think at this stage it is looking like a bad part...

This is the third item that has been dodgie from this supplier including a window regulator and an expansion tank that left me having to replace the engine... Now I am not very happy that another faulty part has left me having to get the engine taken out and drop over $1k in labour...

Do you think he would/should cover some of the labour?

unless the mechanic works for the parts supplier I doubt it...

at best you might get a free replacement part.....

How does the clutch feel underfoot?
I had this happen to me also, turned out that the pivot bolt had snapped.
