    Another Disco 1 Electrical Problem

    Hi,

I have just recently purchased my first Land rover and have a bit of a query that someone maybe able to help me with.

Whats happening is that at any revs above idle or coasting (TDI Auto by the way), the headlights and dash illumination lights occillate from dull to bright about 2 or 3 times a second.

It's more of an anoyance really, still quite safe to drive at night as the dull part of the cycle is really only just noticable, but noticable enough to give you the irits after 10 minutes of driving or so.

Not sure if this is happening with the electical system when the lights aren't on, everything else seems to be functioning fine.

I have checked all the connections that I can access under the bonnet just to be sure, although I'm leaning towards a crook alternator or regulator given the cycle from dull to bright is pretty stable (not erratic at all). Installed also is a simple dual battery sytem, old solenoid type.

I haven't been able to get it to an auto sparky yet, just wondering if anyone else out there has come across this before?

    Thanks Guys.

A new alternator will fix it. Sometimes one diode goes open circuit, so no red light but limited output. Flashing lights are a sign.

    Thanks Phillip,

    Much appreciated.

As I mentioned, I was leaning towards the Alternator/Reg being suspect, so moving forward I'll be on the hunt for a new setup.

Is there an online or otherwise Land Rover parts company that anyone could recommend? I'm a little remote with work at the moment so I'll need to chase up over the phone/net and in Vic would be preferrable.

Also, if I'm buying a new alt, is it worth looking into an upgrade to aftermarket or larger amp while I'm at it?

    Thanks again.

    Bits in Hobart ....

You're in Hobart, so go to Argyle Street and talk to Alan Howard at British 4WD. 03 62349444? Does this help?

Where in Victoria are you working? There will be others to recommend...

    Hi Pete,

Thanks for the Hobart hook up, I've heard good things about Justin Cooper in Kingston also.

As for the Vic connection, I was fishing for a standout company(s) that a few people could recommend that will come in handy for when I finally make it home again. I try to fix things myself as much as possible and sometimes a second or third opinion (even via the phone or email) is helpful when the leaning curve has gone near vertical.

BTW, I'm in Orbost at the moment and find it hard to get to the local guys (who have been great) given the hours I'm doing, and like i mentioned, like to do it myself as much as possible.

    Thanks Again.
