    Question Petrol too old?

Does anyone know how long you can leave petrol in your tank before it's too old. I've been running my Disco on LPG for the last year and I've had half a tank of unleaded sitting in it over that time.

I only use petrol for cold starts and then switch it back to gas. I'm starting to worry about the age of the fuel now - is there any risk using the old petrol for an extended amount of time? Should I drain the tank and change my fuel filter?

    Cheers.

it most likely isn't a problem, just top up the tank with more fuel and use the petrol a bit more often

There is no magic age beyond which it is no good - there are too many variables such as degree of infection, temperature, humidity etc.

I fired up my lotus on the weekend and the petrol in it was at least 3 years old. It seemed to work fine. However when I drove it it wasn't very happy at all at low revs and when accelerating... but it does like at least 98RON.

I drained most of the fuel and will use in the mower. I'll put some fresh stuff in this weekend and see if it goes better.

3 months is optimum, 6 months is usually OK except if you get a lot of evaporation, either air leaks or hot weather is bad for fuel. Top up with some premium, should fix it.

    Thumbs up

Thanks everyone. I'll top it up and run it on petrol for a while. I've got some injector cleaner I might add to the tank too. Cheers.

You can buy an additive called "octane booster" that sort of restores some of the octane rating that has decreased with the age of the fuel.
