    Disco Tacho

The Tacho in my 1996 TDi Discovery has stopped working, I pulled the instrument panel off checked all the wires there plugged it all back in and still doesnt work, or it will just jump up and down a bit then stop all together again.

Any ideas what the problem may be and how to fix it, or am i going to have to just replace the instrument panel ??

    Cheers

    Roy

when my taco died on me the other day it was about 1km before my belt shredded....I had lost some reinforcing backing of the belt...although the belt was still on it had no tension so there for not strong enough to turn the pulleys efficiently....

Possibly not your problem but something to keep in the back of your mind

Hmmmm, I only changed the belts about 2thou ago. And it was working fine back then, wondering if there is a sender unit that might be stuffed or something ???

Tacho is driven off the alternator, W terminal, grey and white wire. Common problem for it to fall off or break. Secondly, if the wire is fine, then an imminent alternator failure is possibly in the pipeline.

The belt i got for the alternator was a little longer than original about 3-5mm. So I torqued it up a little more. Now that i type it out it sounds a little dodgy. But i will check the wire first and get a new belt anyway

Actually scratch that last post, I temporarily confused the air con compressor with the alternator. Checked those wires they look a little worse for wear but otherwise attached. Might change them out anyways.

As JC said check the tach output wire from the alt, if it is loose just pull it off and nip the connector closed slightly with a pair of long nose pliers and clean the terminal on the alt. I did this and havent had a problem with mine in about 18months.

    Tacho

    Both problems in mine...

When my tacho died suddenly, it was my alternator that was dead. It went just like that, no warning!!! (still, gotta love a diesel when that happens).

subsequently (much later), the tacho started jumping around intermittently, and as described, the sender wire on the back of the alternator had a dodgy connection. Crimped the spade connection a bit tighter, and it's been right as rain since.
