barry took over making the maxi drive axles and drive flanges.
G'Day All,
can anyone give me the options available for fitting stronger CV's to the front of my D1 ?
I currently have McNamara rear billets fitted up with my Detroit (Which have twisted)
And I have Maxi-Drive Front Axels fitted in the front with a Detroit Tru-Track, Which have worked fine with that set up !
But I am switching to a front Air Locker for an upcoming 4WD event and I think I need to upgrade the CV's !
I know I can get the Ashcroft axle / CV set but I would prefer to use the front Max axles that I already have ?!?!
What would fit and considering I have to replace my J-mac Axles in the rear (due to Twist) I need it to be cost effective way ? I have herd that County CV's Are stronger ?? Do they fit straight in ? or what mods do we require ? Can you just buy better Ashcroft CV's that would fit my Maxi Axles and how much are they??
Any advice would be appreciated !
Cheers and thanks in advance !
On my 95 fender I have upgraded to county cv's. Using an arb 24 spline air locker into maxi drive axles into county cv's into maxi drive flanges. Converted to run in oil. Not a cheap exercise though. I'm fairly confident you can do this on the d1
Hope this helps
cheers
Phil
I just asked the same question to Hi Tuff (Maxi axles)
The original CV is not the same spline size as the County, so you can not upgrade the CV's without changing the axles sizes from the original.
You have upgraded axles but they are the same size as the originals. As far as I can work out there are no upgraded CV's made for the original axle sizes.
Long and short of it.
To upgrade the CV's you need to change the axles sizes from the original
On the plus side, I'm looking for a front TruTrack and new axles![]()

I'm thinking of converting to county cv's in my d1, here's a reply i got of Garry who has just done the conversion to his...
Hi Tim
Yes I have converted one side of my disco to run County CV's.
It is not a very difficult job but NOT a straight swap.
The Later D1 CV's have a smaller Nose on the CV than the early RR or the County.
By the Nose I mean the front of the CV that runs in the Stub Axle Flange.
So the issue is to Machine out the Flange to accept the County bronze bushing so that the County CV will run in your Stub Axle.
Not a very hard lathe job, you should have no trouble finding a local Machine shop to do the job for you.
County CV’s run out at about $180 MR,
I used Hi Tough axle and drive flanges which runs to about another $500 or so, better talk to Barry about pricing, he does a kit for the conversion, with all the bits you need.
You will need the drive flange to run the County CV as it is one piece. The small axle is attached (part of) the CV. Bigger than post 95 D1 spine.
The other option you have (if yours is a pre 94 D1 or RRC) is the use the pre 85 Range Rover CV which is almost as strong but retains the small stub axle
You still need to do the lathe work to the flange. Some say that having the small axle acts as a fuse, but I can not see it, I just see another 10 spine to break
As for the Anti burst rings, I have had some made but so far have not installed them. They will make your CV stronger, but it will also be larger which means they will no longer fit through the hole in the assembled swivel housing. This means that fitting and removal (also and bush repairs) will require you the break the housing, fit the CV then reassemble the swivel with the CV in place.
The county CV is a big improvement over the D1 CV, which is medium duty at best (and probably lots of kilometers old) so its up to you I can get you a set of Anti-Burst rings for $150 if you want them.
Hope this helps
Cheers
Gary

next month he will have his axle/cv kits back in stock 660usd.
Rover Tracks Heavy Duty Land Rover Accessories
considering the aud is crap against the usd its still cheaper to get axles out of rovertracks. my rear set will land any day now ($704aud) cheaper than anywhere else in oz, and you dont have to buy the axle end caps seperate...these dont have em
cheers phil
I run the old rover tracks axle/cv kit, cost me 660 shipped when i got them IIRC, Aussie dollar was strong then
They have received a hard time on 37s with no troubles at all
It only took about a week to get them here from the day i paid, i dont recall exactly how long but i do remember being supprised when they turned up so quickly!
a week tops (7days) my axles left the us via usps on the 26th they arrived yesterday 30th.
about 180aud freight.
cheers phil
