Steam is steam, and evaporates as such soon after leaving the tailpipe. White 'smoke' is unburnt/ partially burnt diesel fuel, Black smoke is burnt diesel, as you said, after a blocked air intake or excessive delivery.
White smoke is easily produced from a Tdi if timing is retarded or lacking in compression.
I am worried about the overheat/ now not starting and blowing white smoke Simon talks about. It doesen't sound very good at all.:( (Blown Head gasket springs to mind...:eek:)
