Yup, Simon unfortunately where an engine has a serious problem it can make other issues difficult to find as the initial problem will cover up other symptoms. Happened to me once with a Td5 which came in undriveable with a blown head gasket. Fitted a head as it was beyond repair only to find the block was porous and leaked coolant into the sump/ hydraulic locked it one morning. A difficult situation indeed but worked out OK in the end. Did a fair bit of labour $ on that job, but these things happen from time to time

Hey simone not a good run for you at all. Your blowby problem was probably the start of your problem, but since it overheated due to a restriction somewhere that you cracked the head in the process. Tdi's don't take well to that at all, so you have started with one problem which caused another that being the head not a cheap one. One of the rings may well be gone causing the combustion gases to pressurise the crankcase and blow oil out of wherever it can. But a simple compression test of the cylinders will reveal that. And your bent turbo fin well that has to be replaced as it is stuffed it wont be doing it's job at all and causing the engine to overfuel. I do feel for you, not a good situation to be in and I hope you come out of this ok at the end. But by the sounds of it your mechanic is replacing what's broken without finding out what was the inital cause in the first place, and charging you for the time he is standing there scratching his head.

as usual you can not back up your remarks with fact.

you are taking advantage of a person with issues to inflate your own ego.

well mate as you know I'm not mechanic...but do have machanic friends who have informed me that if the man was doing the job proper he would have done a test for such before he even started.....what l mean is exactly that do the test needed to ascertain a course of action, not just go in and do things ass about and then charge people for your incompetence ...

in a simplistic way..."because that's all you seem to think l have to offer"....it's really the same as you coming into the restaurant and ordering a meal... you decide you don't quite like the sauce and send it make for me to fix and then i have audacity to charge you again for the for my labor part and as well, ill charge you again for the meal

    cheers

there is no test that will tell you that 100%, unfortunately, with the other problems that the motor has / had at the time . some things you just have to work your way thru.

my main concern is you were shooting your mouth off about something you have no knowledge of and causing the poor guy at the center of this more grief...

your post added nothing and it achieved nothing but creating angst.

a pretty low act imho and i personally think you owe the man a rather large apology...

To be honest, when I read Cucinadio's earlier posts, I wondered how a mechanic could check the rings on an engine that had died like that. Surely it would have needed the sump stripping off and the pistons removed to look at them - and I doubt that would tell you much. If he'd gone that far, then he might as well fit new rings and hone the bore.

It all adds up to a lot more expense for the owner.
