I just went to have a look at a Land Rover 1995 tdi auto

Hi, I just went to have a look at a Land Rover 1995 tdi auto.

There is a lot of oil around the engine, black oil.

There is a fair amount of transmission fluid under neath and around the bottom of the transmission case.

took it for a run and at 100km+ the front shudders.

up hill there was a big cloud of black smoke too.

...Should I run for the hills?

the owner said the head was redone about 70,000km ago.

is it normal for these things to leak so much?

any info would be great, i really want one.

    Cheers

    thats why they rust less

mine leaks alot, its not too much of a big deal i dont think, but some other people might dis agree....

The smoke is a normal thing for them, the wobble might not be too good...

What's the service history like? Try to pick up the details about bits that have been replaced, how much expense has been spared or not spared.

The smoke of itself wouldn't necessarily put me off... not if it was only under full load going up a steep hill.

Same goes for the fluid leaks and the wheel shudder, but you'd be wise to get someone who knows their landies to check it over.

Once you've got an informed opinion from someone you'll be able to tell he's dreamin' or not.

A leaking brake vaccum pump can spew a lot of oil around, and makes things look worse than it really is. Four or five hundred bucks to fix this. Can you get them to clean it up, and then take it for another drive so you can see where it's leaking?

whats wrong with the oil thats how you know that it was fitted with factory rust protection, black smoke up a hill.....its diesel and your going up a hill with your foot flat to the floor giving it twice as much fuel as it can burn, the shudder is prob some bushes needing replacing

Mine leaks very little almost no oil.

Drives dead straight at 110km/h and blows smoke only when pushed like all diesels as they push unburnt fuel through.

So I would say run for the hills.

    This is brilliant.

Thanks so much for the replys i realy appreciate it.

I was pretty sure that black smoke was ok, (white smoke no good).

The opil leaks and the tranny fluid and the wheel shudder at 100+km was tha main worry.

My last 4wd had steering issue, lifted jeep with 32's, so i sorta think i know how to hunt down steering related issues.

The oil and the tranny fluid has me concerned.

its a private sale so its harder to get them to release the car to have it inspected.

    we'll see how we go.

    Thanks again everyone.

Wobble could be steering damper, swivel preload and or wheel bearings. Possibly rocker cover gasket leak or just loose r/cover bolts (mine had a weep and found bolts were less than finger tight ), if its had a head check to see if it was new or recoed as recoed dont usually last long depending on how it was done.

you would be doing well to find a deisel that dont blow smoke

The opil leaks and the tranny fluid and the wheel shudder at 100+km was tha main worry.

mine leaks everywhere but that has never stopped the old girl

My last 4wd had steering issue, lifted jeep with 32's, so i sorta think i know how to hunt down steering related issues.

ive also been into jeeps but any 4wd will have death wobble if you have worn bushes, bad damper, bad allingment, bad wheel balance prob a very simple fix

The oil and the tranny fluid has me concerned.

its a private sale so its harder to get them to release the car to have it inspected.

most people wont have a problem with this if they want to sell it, i would be sus if they had a problem with it

    Hi mate,

    I have a disco 1 - 1992.

Great car, very capable off road so they can be treated rough.....

No matter what the car..... if they will not let you take it to a mechanic for an inspection..... DO NOT BUY IT....

If there is nothing to hide, the owner will want to seel it. An independant inspection is Normal.... not unusual.

If you want a really good mech in Sydney PM me and I will give you his details. He has a LAnd Rover / Range Rover workshop. I have known him for 20 years and when I am in Syd I take the car in.

The only reason I mention this is they are an awsome car.... awsome but you might have to get a few things done...

But rule 1 in my book is.... no inspection.... don't hesitate walk away....

    Jay
