moving from the 1993 V8 into the 1994 tdi.

G’day all, been a long time between drinks for me around here. Yer I know…. But it’s life, got 2 kids & another on the way. Seams in the last couple of years the Landy’s have taken a back seat around here.
The toy (93 V8 disco) has been read the riot act & SHMBO has said….. Not paying V8 rego anymore, it has to go.
So after the dust had settled, I asked if there could possibly be some compromise…… If you can find a 4cyl that everything fits on….. Then we can talk….
2 weeks later I found the solution, a lady had a 1994 tdi disco she wanted to get rid of & was open to offers. I made her an offer of $2500 & she accepted
The 1994 is in ok nick,199,000km, a few scratches on the body, but it is straight & should come up ok with a good polish.
The interior is ok, but it has seen a lot of sun, easy fixed though, I just tidied the dash up, fitted a dash matt & after I replace the steering wheel she should be as good as new.
Mechanically it is ok, a few little thing, but I will get to that shortly.
With that the boss was happy, no more 8 cyl rego……

So now the games begin, I will steadily start unbolting bits from the 93 & fit to the 94.

Here is the 93 in all her glory

The diffs were rebuilt with 4.1 r&p gears when the rear maxi drive went in, so I am going to just unbolt & rebolt them under the new beast. The old 93 has a 2” body lift & 3” suspension lift.
Although when I refit the diffs under the 94, it will get the same coils, just less the 1” spacers & no body lift. Try & keep it down a little this time, the suspension works well, but I don’t need the body lift these days…… well at this stage.
Only problem that brings is the LRA long travel suspension kit won’t fit with out a 2” body lift……. So not sure what I will do yet.

Any way, here is a picky of the new addition 1994 Disco tdi.

So I don’t know to much about the 94, who can tell me what this engine is ?? 200tdi or 300tdi ?? It has a build date of February 1994. Any info will be appreciated.
I will be doing some research in the coming weeks, but any info I can get 1st will be a bonus

    The engine looks like this.

Any help there is much appreciated.

I haven't had time to have a good look, this thing is leaking oil like crazy Can anyone tell me what it is ??
It lives on the drivers side of the motor close to the fire wall ????

Once again thanks in advance for all your help & suggestions, I look forward to keeping you all updated as it happens, although don't go holding your breath, it may take a couple of months the way I work these days

Yup, its a 300. Thats a nice set up rig.. so you plan to keep the large tyres etc too - cut guards etc etc on the new one?

Either way, a 94 for $2,500 is a good buy!

Thats a good buy! Make sure you check the gearbox output shaft and transfer input gear for spline wear, and that leaking thing is the brake vacuum pump. Common 300Tdi leak point.

Also, keep the rust out of the alpine windows and sills, and you'll be pleased to know that the heater core replacement on that later model is heaps easier

That'd be the brake vacuum pump. You can do a fix on these - as per other threads - but by most reports the fix doesn't last that long. Better off getting a new unit IMHO.

Nice buy by the way. You'll love the 300 Tdi!

mmmmmmmmm funny you should mention that, the heater box has been disconnected in the engine bay, I was going to look into replacing it down the track.....
    What is involved ??

Thanks to everyone on the engine Identification, it's very much appreciated
Also thanks for identifying the vacuum pump, guess i will be on the blower to order a new one tomorrow Better keep that quiet

Yer we are going to swap everything we can over, main things I am going to leave out are the Body lift, coil spacers & the long range sill tanks as I am hoping I can fit some lpg cylinders under there if all things go to plan in a couple of months This whole turbo lag thing is taking some getting use to again

And yer, the 93 is a top rig, in better nick then the 94, but I guess one has to do what he has to do
The 94 doesn't sound as good as the 93 at 4 rpm either

That can be cured without LPG fumigation, Some careful attention to pump timing and fuelling will do wonders. These engines are quite tuneable and offer excellent fuel economy!
Apart from the sound, you won't miss the V8 eventually.

1st mods once we get rid of the missus lancer will be up the road to a Bloke I know who use to own the odd landy & has set up a diesel specialist work shop.
He has already been in my ear about a new exhaust & a tune up firstly, then he wants it for some LPG injection

    Hi Guys,

Might be speaking way out of turn here, as I don't know whats involved but......

.......if the 93 is in better nick and with all the work that has gone into it, would it be a viable option to swap the V8 for the diesel?.........

    Would this be less work?

Is this done or is it a major head f*** that sane persons wouldn't even contemplate?
