    Stalling on lower octane petrol

My Disco has mostly been run on 95+ and I know that's what it should have, but I'm not sure the behaviour I'm seeing is what I should expect.

On the crappy guff stuff it will run much more loud, stall a lot - under load and on idle, and it seemed to be running rich - heaps of soot around the exhaust.

I put the good stuff in it, and gave it a bottle of octane boostef & cleaner and it runs great with no soot.

it probably needed the clean out, and will need a service or looking at, the difference in the fuel will not cause your symptoms.
chech thermostat, plugs, air filter, clean the stepper motor and the airflow meter.
    where are you?
it may help to let our members local to you advise you further

My D1 gets 20-30 K's more per tank on 91 octane than it gets on 95 or 98. Seems to drive OK on 91 also.

When mine was running rich, fouling plugs and running like crap it was a faulty vacuum advance unit.

my 94V8i disco runs like a sick chook on normal fuel, 95 octane has more bang for you buck, and remember Australia has crap unleaded fuel it's not much better than watered down piddle.

Best bet go back to 95 and a car that works

I run my 96 on Caltex Vortex 98 when I can get it, and I always get better ecconomy/mileage out of her,, and she pulls a load a whole lot better too,,
I'll get an extra 50+ klms on the higher grade over the 91octane even when towing,,
Check your servicing like Harry said, something will be wrong there, and as Dammag said, check your vacuum,,, it seems to be a common fault with them,,
When I discovered mine was stuffed, I had a mate tune it via a vacuum gauge rather than timing, and boy, did that make a difference too,,

The fuel won't make a difference mate, you may get more wear over time but the fuel octane level only makes a difference if you are running a high compression car (i.e a heavily worked or performance engine). So for you're standard v8 i doubt it would cause any of those syptoms.

Well you were right - I went to Stradbroke island at the weekend all sloshing full of Mobil premium and I experience stalling on two occaisions.

The car won't start easily afterwards either, so maybe that points to a heat component like thermostat or MAF sensor?

I'm in Coomera, Gold Coast, and it only got serviced 5k ago by local Landy specialists, so not likely to be plugs or filter (it was doing it a little bit before the service, but much worse now)

I'll try catch Super Cheap on the way home tonight and get some brake cleaner to blast the MAF with.

I'll clean the stepper motor too once I've found what it looks like
