    Coolant Level

On both of my 300 Tdi's with the level in the expansion tank correct, when cold, on opening the plug on the thermostat housing the level can be bought back to overflowing by the addition of a cup full of water. Is this correct?Although there is no indication of overheating one of the Disco's does, after a couple of weeks, give a gurgling sound when going around corners which can be remedied by topping up the coolant.Does this sound normal?Or head gasket about to go.......or paranoia.

You can read at Workshop manual that you have to chack coolant level in the expansion tank, at the "X"mark that is approx in the half level.
If You open the thermostat cap You allow air to come in, and the level in thermostat housing will go naturally lower.
If You are filling the system you shall fill it from the thermostat cap, until coolant level reaches the "X" mark in the expansion tank. Then You must put thermostat cap, and start the motor. The expansion tank level will be lower, and You need to add a quantity to reach the "X" mark again.
You must then control that the level doesn't change for long time, everytime when the moyor is cold, only in the expansion tank. If You have then to add coolant, i´m afraid that the gasket or a hose are making trouble.

I hope this can help You, sorry for my spelling (my language is spanish)
    Regards

One thing more... If there is too much coolant in the expansion tank, there is the possibility to damage it, because it is designed to allow water to expand, allowing air to come off by the presostatic cap.
If there is too much water, as it comes out less easy than air, You can damage the tank by overpressure...
    Be carefull with coolant level!

Thanks German.I had previously left the cap on the expansion tank whilst filling the system from the radiator then thermostat plugs.Have also fitted a new cap and have a little black box ems to go on,so that should keep a watch on coolant level in the tank.
