    Radiator upgrade, anybody done one

1995 3.9V81 Disco in Cairo, Egypt, Summer temps early 40’s C.

I am thinking of upgrading my radiator and would like to know if anybody’s done this before and also what your opinions are of my idea.
A standard Disco radiator has 2 rows of cores (cross tubes) there is room for a third set of cores, my theory is that it will increase the cooling area by 50% by adding the extra tubes.
Anybody had experience of this upgrade or any opinions?

Adding an extra row does not provide a 50% increase in cooling capacity. You can only get that by increasing the frontal area of the radiator. That extra row will be cooled by prewarmed air from the first two rows. It should provide an improvement but not 50%.

I've done that on my 4.6 Rover car and it did run cooler than before with only two rows. Is there a tropical spec radiator available for the Disco? It gets up to 45 degrees here in summer but my 3.9 D1 never complains.

Our 98 came from northern WA, it has a 4 core rad, recored it jan this year cost $700. No probs with cooling in summer, but slow to heat up when outside temps below 10 dc. Been thinking about making a little curtain to cover the grill, like the poms do in winter.

If your Discovery is Middle East or GCC spec then you should already have a larger radiator installed. There was a modification called the GULF Campaigne which had the more effective radiator and A/C upgrades.
My Discovery is a 4.6 Efi and I don't have any cooling issues here in Dubai...which is just as hot as Egypt.

    Regards.

Slug, thanks, I didn't mean 50% better cooling just 50% more pipe exposed to moving air.

Traco, I've talked to a couple of companies in the UK and they dodn't have tropical spec rads, I think they thought I was crazy

Sly, I shouldn't have this problem in winter as I've Kenlowe elec fans fitted, they just won't get much work in winter.

Streaky, It's not GCC spec, the original importer brought in the cheapest models he could as duty here is 250% on a big engined car.

Thanks to all for your input, I'm going to go ahead, I'll keep you posted, if anybodies interested that is.

If you want a GCC spec rad then contact GulfStars in Sharjah, UAE. They would have them in stock. They may also have a website.....Google it.
Or for a second hand rad you could try the website of AAA in Dubai. They sell used parts.
My gut feeling is that a normal rad in good order should be fine unless you do towing. Get it cleaned out or have a new matrix put in at one of teh local Sinaya's.

    Good luck.

Streaky, thanks for the info, I sent AAA an email and got a very quick & helpful reply from Gordon. I'm now working on how to get the rad here.
