    Hello Sparksdisco,
I worked for a 4wd mob for a while and the question was asked on a fairly regular basis not only on Landys but on other lower brands on the food chain, the answer kept coming up put it on the rear. There was a article done in one of the local 4wd mags a while ago front or rear.

As for air or mechanical i am asking the same question.

    Cheers Jim

    Rear.

In case you missed it, rear.

I can't understand why people put lockers in the front first.

Normally climbing a hill is problematic when one of the rears starts to spin. The fronts spin first, but if you lose one of the rears you are in strife because that's where the weight is going uphill.

the rear seems to be the first choice......arb wire up twin lockers so the the rear has to be engaged first prior to the front

just install two and be done with it

A Detroit in the rear and you are on your way.
Later on a Truetrac at the front but only if you have tough axels at the back first

I think most folk who put it in the front first are those unlucky enough to have a Patrol or Cruiser and a half decent LSD in the back but if you are priveledged to have the green oval, then the back is the first place to fit it. Like others said, usually needed most when going uphill and thats where all the weight is tranferred to

Utes might be better with it in the front also, but I reckon for most things the rear is the go. Even for a Patrol I'd put it in the rear, I think their LSDs are as hopeless as every other OE LSD.

I think that is generally accepted (in non LR circles) that the GQ/GU LSD's are best in the business but getting a LR nut to admit that can be difficult

I agree with you re them being the best for an OE fitment, but not the best in the business - I'd leave that to the torsen type like in the Hummers. I'm probably also the least one eyed on here, especially considering my blue ute has half toyota running gear (axles, wheels, steering, brakes) and the front axle is about to have the toyota diff replaced with a GQ one back into the toyota housing. I've just not seen the GQ/GU LSD do anything exciting when its actually in a situation that relies on the LSD without the assistance of weight shifting onto the axle. The one really good set that I have seen were on Shane Gerrish's comp GU ute and he had them adjusted right up nice and tight.
    Cheers
