Gday all, im a newb and having just bought my first landy disco am pretty keen on learning about them, its a 2.5ltr turb diesel manual that i picked up reasonably priced as it has a blown head gasket that i am able to fix.

Any general info that anyone has about them would be good, i no bugger all about them and personally like there suspension set up and am hoping for a trouble free reliable diesel and trans axle?? what are common mods im thinking 2.5inch lift tires the usale things, are they lsd?

    Cheers

okay , seeing you're doing the Job of replacing the Head-Gasket yourself , best advice i can give you is to obtain a RAVE CD for a D1. It shows sequences involved in undoing/doing up the head bolts and the degrees in doing the heabolts ,

According to the RAVE you'll remove and Discard head Bolts and get new ones

See Note above , Bolts Must be tightened in Seq and with the correct Degree of operation.

All the best and keep us posted.

There are a lot of users with 350k or more km with original engines, but if any cooling trouble suddenly comes, and Your engine is not "protected", then they are common to do head gaskets!

Be fussy about the cooling system. If its in good condition all is well, but if it goes it can be a big problem.
I just replaced the original radiator in my 1995 so that's a good run but it was on the way out although still cooling fine in normal running, but under load it went up.
Check the radiator overflow bottle. If it is the older style with a joint in the plastic about half way down, that joint can crack and then you can cook your engine as the coolant pumps out under pressure ( I speak from personal experience). Replace it with the later one-piece bottle.
The cooling system is pressurised to pump the water to the top of the engine, so it needs to be free of leaks and the coolant kept up to the right level.
If all is well, then it works very well.

    Other issues include:
    Timing belt.
Lift pump - particularly lines to pump.

They are the main ones that can strand you.

    Then there are:
    Vacuum pump - oil leaks.
    Electric window - solder joint.
Window lift mechanism - broken roller
    Door lock spring.

Plenty of answers can be found on this site.

methinks you need to read up on LR's,,,

sometimes its not just a gasket to fix these,,,

you should be asking WHY did it blow?

all the above posts give you a good start,,
spend a few DAYS on here reading about 300Tdi's
like all LR engines,, they are not "normal",,,
