    coolant pump TDI 300 Disco

On the way home today my battery light came on, on popping the bonnet I found a thrown belt with coolant everywere. I check the radiator and it was down about a seventh, all the hoses appeared OK. I started the car and there appeared to be no leaks. I spun the water pump pulley and it spun free but it then caught on a housing bolt, I think the shaft that goes from the pulley into the pump housing is bent.

Is it likely that this has occured when the belt came off?
Can it be fixed or do I need to replace the pump?

mmmmm thats an odd one did you notice whether the water pump had any play on the pulley....

I wonder whether it was the pump at fault that allowed the belt to come off....

a new water pump is around 150bux....if it was me I would get a new one but thats me..can't really afford to mess around with your coolng set up in the tdi's so I wouldn't personally take the risk if you dont have to thats just my opinion though

I would also be checking all your other pulleys to for play......having had a belt shred myself it was a pulley at fault
Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......

Mine did this as it died, too.
The outer bearing rolls were bad, without coolant leaks. The belt has gone because the pulley was "jumping".
You must change the water pump. The belt can destroy another parts if the "jump" is not so lucky next time (my case)

Thanks for the advice, I agree the coolant system is too fatal to a TDI to play around with. How hard is the coolant pump to replace?

The main bother is getting the serpentine belt off (and back on again).
    Cheers

Changing the pump is a simple process, but be aware the lower three bolts carry on through to the block via the 'P' gasket. It is likely you will disturb this seal especially if it is an older paper gasket.Replace it with a metal 'P' gasket when you replace the water pump.

    I agree with eddy.
The task requires more work to separate a little bit the alternator and pump support, but you avoid future "three bolt" gasket leaks.

Ohh, and if were you I would buy an engine saver too... the water level sensor is about 5mm long, so the high pitched alarm would of rang out LOOONG before any serious loos of coolant! Well worth the few hundred IMHO.
