    power steering??

    94 discovery 3.9 v8
Steering is whining/groaning when you turn the steering like it's low on oil but the resevoir is full.
Is this likely to be the pump itself

    grease

own a 94 v8 and had similar problem or sound's , directly infront of the steering wheel where the steering mechanicals enter the engine bay they come through a rubber grommet , grease up this area well and see if it helps , it fixed my annoying groans and sqeaks

Check your Power steering high pressure hose from your Resevoiur to the pump and one to the steering box ,they 're both somehow bolted to using a figure 8 shape braket to the cross member up in front , ensure they are both Bone dry ,if one of them has a leak and is not manitaning hydraulic pressure hence the whining noise , I had this in my D1 and replaced them both , as both has never been replaced.

    Power Steering Additive

Have you tried adding some Power Steering Additive?

My power steering used to squeal and feel heavy quite a lot but I chucked in some Lucas Power Steering additive and it sorted out the problems pretty much straight away.

It won't hurt to give the lines a quick once over too though in case there is a leak/kink/break somewhere.

Well ive washed it all down and the lines appear to look fine with no leaks,
Sounds like these pumps don't give to much trouble.
So will try out the P/Steering additive
    Thanks again

I would put my money on it being the pump
We had an annoying whine in our d1, it turned out to be the pump, we then replaced it and all is good
The pumps in the 200tdi's seem to start giving problams around the 300k mark, i'm pretty shore they are the same pump as the v8's

Thankyou Sam_d, drained my P/S resevoir and filled it with Lucas stopleak/treatment, after 1 day nearly all the moaning and groaning has stopped, and much easier to steer, although it wasn't leaking this stuff is great.
Also sprayed the uni-joints on the steering arm with WD, all good again thanks.

LR also introduced a modified PAS hose (from pump to box IIRC) that had an extra flexible hose section in the middle of it to eliminate resonance.
