Thread: I keep killing airflow meters

    UPDATE.
All roads are pointing to the coil/AMP/HT leads breaking down as it gets hotter.

I've not got the car back yet but the symtoms all started to show up at lesser intervals as I drove it.

IE. The first time the car lost power at around 150km of driving.
Changed the airflow meter and then drove 100km before the car lost all power again.Changed it for another one....
Next time it started to lose power was after 35km.

Every time the car lost power we changed the AFM but I didn't try the old ones after everything had cooled down.

Will now fit new coil & amplifier modual...fill it up with petrol and hit the motorway.

I may be miles off, but my old WRX showed this type of fault following an Ecotec tune and dyno set up - I went through 3 air flow meters at big bucks! I was told by a very experienced engineer, that it had run lean on the dyno, burned a piston ring land, and the knock sensor was retarding the timing. It was cured by a new engine, Autronic computer and finally the sale of the vehicle to buy another Land Rover!

    Well now I'm getting confused.

I fitted a brand new Bosch coil and ignition amplifier today. Started it up and revved the hell out of it. Perfect for the first 6km then.......drastic loss of power on the highway and back to the workshop.

Tickover is fine, not lumpy or missing. It's seems to hate being under load.

The fuel pressure regulator is very recent, so is the pump.

I'm running out of ideas so gave the car to the local Rover shop to see if they can trace it.

Since the car was ok for a while after changing the coil, does that mean the AFM is not the problem?

If the tuning module is simply a plug in box; have you tried diconnecting it and driving?

Maybe the TPS is going out of spec. They tend to wear just off idle and send the ECU into limp home. Regards Philip A

I think your computer is taking timing out because you have issues

This engine is in a Defender, right?

I would be earthing the engine block, and ECU etc directly to the battery. DO NOT rely on earth points on the seat box or body to be 100% in these vehicles, especially in extremes of environment.

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈

This is in my Discovery Justin.
I should point out that these faults all came immediatly after I drove the car out from teh rolling road so we instantly assumed that the problems were associated with something that had been done with the ignition, mapping, ecu etc.
Now I'm not so sure...over the weekend I was able to hook up a guage to teh fuel line and check the pressure directly from the pump and also after the fuel pressure regulator.
It was less that one bar!
This is from a genuine Rover pump thats done less than 12,000kms so I never thought it would play up so quickly.
I'm sourcing a new pump today and will sling it in at lunch time.

Afterall this messing around it could be something as simple as that!

Will get back later with the news.

    Regards.

I fitted the new pump yesterday and so far the car has run sweet as a nut.

The issue I have now is that mapping was done with a fuel pump running below it's peak performance. As such the tick over is slightly lumpy on the pick up.

    Updates as and when required.
