Just buy a new switch, why bugger around trying to rig up a dodgy and possibly dangerous alteration to a perfectly workable arrangement, on a series landy i would understand but on a latish model car its just a bushmechanic fix and a bad one at that.

Sounds like the ignition switch barrel is the problem. Just remove the key switch and take it to a locksmith to rebuild. If you remove the switch it shouldn't cost more than 75$ to rebuild the ignition switch.

How is it dangerous? all the ignition barrel does is run a +12V signal to the START wire, so whats the difference between the ignition barrel doing that job, or a push button?

True, on a later model car it might be a quick fix, but that's in the eye of the beholder.

And a switch, relay and bit of wire is a lot cheaper and easier than getting the whole ignition barrel out!

I like the idea of a push start and if I could have one in mine I would......remember one thing that wears out ignition barrels is the constant stop start of a vehicle...turning it off and turning it on...exactly what happens in off road situations

when off road all of us are constantly turning he cars on and off while we wait for people or get out to watch people etc...this can lead to premature barrel wear...so If I could I would.

And apart from that push starts look cool

Thanks for the advice... nice to see some healthy debate.

I'm still coping with it in the state it's in (parking on hills and waiting for it to fail) and wondering what to do - the new lock isn't that expensive, around $240, so maybe I'll make a locksmith the first point of contact and work from there.

Push button start still seams appealing, but only if it's going to be reliable and good quality... you can never have enough chrome toggle switches

I'll let you know what happens.

I might just buy one anyway put it in the dash and just hook up the light

perhaps I can connect it to an after market horn...that Moo's

How cool would that be....that wouldn't be dangerous, unless it was a Moo that was mistaken for a mating call

    Now you're talking!

    push-button-start.jpg

I wonder how it would suit the beige interior?
