I got the problem on both D1s. The green one left me almost stranded, managed to get the key to turn after 20min of trying. Take the barrel out, take it to a locksmith and have it re-done. I did this with mine, got a spare key cut too all for $50.
Locksmith told me DONT spray WD40 in the barrel as it washes the fine oil away.

Thanks for that. I had a day off today so i decided to get the lock out - as it turned out the switch at the connection end of the barrel had detached from the unit slightly, looks like someone had done a previous repair job on it before I got the car. Anyway, I was easily able to get the pieces back together and voila - ignition working!
Looks like the street-cred of having a race-car start button will have to wait.
Thanks again everyone for your advice
Damo.
