First Land Rover - Recovery Points Needed

    G'day,
I just bought a '94 Discovery Series 1 that has had a very easy suburban life so far. It's my first 4WD and took it up to Wilbinga over the weekend to play in the dunes with my buddy's Patrol. Had a great time and the V8 combined with auto transmission makes for some fantastic fun in the sand!!! Learnt my first lesson in tyre pressure (I’ve attached a few pics)

One of the things I've got to get sorted though is recovery points for the front. I’m happy to take the tow ball unit out and just use the pin for the rear. But the front doesn’t have too many options at the moment and I’d like to get something I can trust installed.

Attached are a couple of photos of the chassis rail/bull-bar arrangement as it is. Has anyone got a similar setup? If so, what have you done?

Is there a good mechanic/shop in Perth that would be able to fit something up? (Preferably someone that has worked on Disco’s before)

Also just got a compressor which is about to go under one of the front seats unless anyone has had bad experience doing this? Or found a better location?

Looking forward to meeting some of you around the tracks of WA into the future and being able to assist in your queries once I get a few km’s and a few stories under my belt.

    Cheers,
    Graham

Make some of these from 13mm steel plate.

The large eye is the recovery attachment point. The two small holes align with the original bumper bolts. And the last hole is secured to the steering drop arm/chassis mount.

Make a template from card board before getting two made in steel.

Since fitting my ARB bumper I removed mine but IIRC these mount inside the chassis rails and you needn'd modify the front air dam either.

    Regards.

Graham, you better check the WA regulations. You cannot just make recovery points yourself as they have to be rated.

The last thing you want to happen is for a home-made job to fail and cause death.

I've got 2 ARB forged hooks bolted through the chassis at the front of my D1. $22.00 each and about an hour to fit, although you do have to get longer bolts than supplied in the pack (make sure they are HT bolts).

With the 2 hooks, you can rig up a bridle if you need to be snatched from the front to spread the load.

If you have got the deep plastic front spoiler, you may have to cut it a bit. I cut the whole front sectin out of mine so I could fit in a winch, so it was already gone.

if you look in the "Markets" section of this website on page 5 of the "external accessories" section you might find exactly what your looking for.

Wow..... I had no idea that Australian regulations where so strict! Sorry for that. If I'd have known I wouldn't have posted.

As an aside. Discovery lashing points are not rated but people still use them as recovery points. Surely a stronger system is more advised.
Do all bolt on extras in WA have to be rated then?
I've been using & supplying these recovery points for more than ten years to Discovery owners & Range Rover Classic and I've not seen or heard of one breaking yet! (we mount them in pairs too for use with a bridle)
As matter of fact.... I've also actually sent the patterns to a number of people of here by post!

Like I said...sorry I'm not aware of local regulations in Australia. I wouldn't want anyone to be endanagered in any way.

    Hi Graham,
I purchased 2 front recovery points from Glen from Roverland in Boronia, Victoria and they were a straight bolt in, no drilling, no cutting. As for the compressor i run a Big red and 1 litre air tank under the drivers seat with no issues (great vibrations when it runs) size wise it fits nice and neat. try not to run the compressor under the bonnet as most of them run thermal cut outs the hotter the air in the quicker they cut out.

    Cheers Jim
