I think something in my front axle is about to go

So im thinking something is pretty well stuffed in my front axle, as driving around town today im getting a grinding noise that seems to be fairly constant now. Doesn't matter if im driving straight or around corners so im not thinking CV joints. Any ideas?

yes, dosent sound like cvs, a flogged out cv will remain quiet in a straight line and when it is bent on an angle and driven hard, eg turning and excelerating it will click and pop and grind. a continus sound is most likely a bearing, if its that bad, you will want to consider a full oil change in the front end, eg ( drain diff oil ) wile you have the sump plug out, get a replacemnt plug that has a magnet, for extra life of diff, i would deffinetly change the oil if you have an air locker ( arb or detroit) because of the seals in them.

in my opinion if you are going to pull it apart, you may as well do both sides and they are like shoes, you wouldent get just one shoe at a time.

the best way to hear the sound is to drive in an ally beside a flat cement wall, with the window down, this will reflect the sound. in my oppinion an instance like this, with continuas noise, i wouldnt drive it, if it was jsut the cv ok fint to the parts stor and back, but not a wheel bearing, its too dangours, there is a chance it may lock up aspecaly on the highway, if you need any parts, i have found british 4wd to be exalent, the 2 times i ahve orderd from him i have had the parts with in 17 HOURS even if i order at 5 pm.

Yeah thanks mate, changed the front diff oil not very long ago and no metal in the oil but it was very black and thick. Only prob is i was suposed to drop it off to have a new long range fuel tank fitted tomorow. So im thinking of postponing that to have a look at the bearings.

have a check of your end caps they not got splits in them have they..mine did and washed all the grease out

thats why I have the heavy duty drive flanges fitted now
Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......

Sounds like bearings or something like a rock jammed in there

    Wheel Bearings!
CV joints are used to make "clac clac" noise by tight turning...

If it is bearings Keith, you can duck up to Casula & grab a couple of complete hub/bearing assemblies to keep you on the road while you get yours sorted.

Be careful how long you wait, i left mine for ages and the bearing housing welded itself to the stub axle. You may get lucky and the wheel may fall off first. Fix it asap dude, it's extremely dangerous.

It could even be as simple as a worn Brake Pad. Could be the inner pad is worn right down. This will cause a grinding sound.

Yeah you nailed it there, rear passeneger side brakes were metal on metal.
So its still at the mechanics getting new brake pads and rotors for the rear.
Also the front bearings were a little loose so they are getting tightened.
