If your Discovery is a series I then you should replace it with the same model or one one from a late Range Rover Classic.
A Series II Discovery diff will not work/fit. It's worth checking the length of the diff too....some were shorter because they had the prop-shaft rubber dough nut.

Be sure to count the splines on your existing half shafts...they must also be the same.

Stronger means more expensive Maxi drive, ARB, Quaife etc....these are not always available second hand but you might get lucky. Disco and Rangie diffs are usually found at the scrappies at better prices than after market diffs.

    Regards.

to answer your question, yes a 1997 model discovery is a series 1, i think the series 2 started around 1998 or 1999

    good luck

    97 Disco I has 24 spline axles/diffs.

I think earlier discos with 200Tdi might be 10 spline. Early rangie were 10 spline. I'm not sure what years disco and rangie changed to 24 spline.

P38 rangie has a different diff.

The weakest part of the rover drive line is the 2 pinion diff. Usually the shaft for the 2 pinions/planet/spider gears in the diff, will break or come loose. Then other parts start to break as bits of metal try to pass through the mesh of the crownwheel teeth. Commonly parts punch out through the banjo cover/pan.

Usually holes in the banjo cover/pan can be welded up or plated over.

The best way to strengthen the diff is to fit a locker or trutrac. All lockers have 4 diff pinions which completely overcomes the 2 pinion weakness. You can get 4 pinion open diffs, but they are not common and you won't save much over a trutrac or detroit locker.

For the price and benefit, you will have trouble beating a trutrac or detroit locker from Keith at rovertracks especially with the current exchange rate. Email keith@rovertracks.com
