In search of a Disco 1. All advice welcomed! :D

I'm looking at several Disco 1's over the next few weeks, so thought I'd give you the background and put a few questions out to you guys.

Complicated scenario, but I'm moving up to the NT early next year and find myself needing a bigger rig than the Jeep TJ Wrangler I have. I love the Jeep and am keeping it here in Vic with mum taking care of it for me, so I can drive it when I'm back on holidays. Anyway, back to the real issue at hand...

Looking at what I can spend on the purchase price of the rig (as little as possible) and knowing that I'll need to do some upgrades, I've been scouring the classifieds and online, and have found a few cheap Disco's which interest me. I don't have any preference for a 3 or 5dr, nor transmission, and the diesels are priced out of my budget. Fuel economy is not important tbh, I stopped caring about that long ago with the TJ! Hehe!

Asides from the TJ issue already mentioned, the main reasons behind the purchase is to haul a lot of stuff up there, go camping and mild 4x4'ing up there, tow my sportsbike/mates boat, do a spot of touring, be a daily-driver in Darwin, and not have a teary over scratches or dents.

There are some things which I'll strip from the TJ to reduce the costs. Upgrades I feel will be necessary will be decent tyres, touring shocks/springs, air compressor, bullbar, driving and reverse lights, headlight protectors, snorkel, roof-rack and ladder, UHF, stereo system, and cargo barrier. I'm sure there's a few things which I've missed in this quick list, so any suggestions or if you know of anyone in Vic who's selling any of these, please speak up.

As for what things to look at during pre-sale inspection, are there any particular things which I should be looking at with the Disco 1's? When the family had one, it was way too new for anything to show up, so no-doubt with age some things have become apparent. Any advice and tips would be greatly appreciated from everyone.

In exchange for your time and effort, I'll do a write-up with pics on the mods and how the relationship with the new beast develops.

Time's very limited for me as I'm going to Europe mid december, getting back end of january, then moving immediately to the NT...not much time to buy and build the machine (amongst other things!), so any quick answers or advice are warmly welcomed!

    Thanks for the reply.

The budget's around the $4-5k mark for a vehicle, and have found a few interesting ones already. There's a few decent looking ones (from what I've found in the ads anyway!) available in that range with some of the mods I want, but would prefer to buy a stock-standard one in better condition than be lured into an average-condition one loaded with goodies. A mate and I will be doing any mechanical work necessary and doing a lot of fabrication so it's set up exactly to my needs and keeps the costs down. We're pretty skilled and tooled up, so no dramas there.

I initially considered Rangies, but the smaller and less useable interior space was an issue, want something newer looking, and the pricing was prohibitive when compared to a Discovery. I prefer the Disco's anyway.

I sugested the rangie because it has a bigger load space than the disco ser1, put the spare on a swing away, tail gate folding down is great for touring/cooking etc. I will have a rangie again one day with a 300tdi fitted, got sick of the fuel with the last one and got a 300tdi disco, used for work so there is no idle time.
    cheers

    Hi Mate,

I had a jeep, had a Grand cherokee in the states, did some very very long trips in it towing a double axles trailer, loved it, saved my wifes life in a snow storm in Kentucky. Thought it was a great car, till I got my 1992 LAnd Rover D1 Tdi.......

Seriously......... since I got the Landi I have not and probably never will look back. I just did 600's today, 300 there 300 back 60 Ltrs. it will do that on or off road (sand included) I get 800K's per tank 82Lt tank just about every tank. No matter the terrain with sensible driving.

I have had to fix a few things but it sounds like you have that sorted.... There is a tonne of very good advice here.

    I have a 92 D1 200 Tdi it's done 310,000 runs like a swiss watch.

You want to do all that stuff in the N.T, add all that gear, do all that towing...... sell the jeep get a 200 or 300 Tdi.

Sorry, I do not mean to appear rude or pushy but I understand the "jeep thing"........ a good D1...... whole higher level of car.

Good luck, if you have to go soon ..... get one when you get back.

    Best of luck.

    Thanks for the reply!

I'll most likely go for an early 5dr diesel Disco, but haven't ruled out a V8 entirely...in the price bracket condition of the vehicle is going to be the decider. Shopping around has been a horrid experience so far (see my post in the 'soapbox' section).

I'm keeping the Jeep in Vic for a few reasons...I need something to drive and have fun with when I'm back on holidays (will be flying between Vic & NT), mum needs a newer car anyway, and it's a bad financial move to sell it as I bought it new 3yrs ago.

I used to be a mechanic so am expecting to fix a few things on whatever I buy, but experience has taught me that every vehicle has it's own particular issues which need to be checked out. If you or anybody else could shed some light on certain things I should be double-checking pre-purchase I'd be most appreciative!

    My Pleasure,

The Tdi really is a great car, I have done about 5000 K's in the last few weeks for work and like I said, once you get it right, like a swiss watch.

I am no mechanic so at the risk of sounding ill informed.....

If the car rolls and is a loose canon on the road... shocks, spring and mabye bushes + tyres should be checked.

Tdi 200, when was the timing belt last done, mine broke on me aftyer I had the car serviced by a very experinced trusted mech. I have been told the 300 has a chain.

Mine used to blow a lot of white smoke though the compression test all came back good. Fuel pump was adjusted, better power, no smoke and better ecconomy.

Try the Markets on this site......?
Put a thread up looking to buy a great TDI, their out there...... I see them all the time.

    Good luck buddy......

Thanks for the input and advice Jay!

I've been trying to find the vehicle classifieds section for the past couple of days without success, and was reluctant to ask a seriously dumb question! LOL! I've found the 'Marketplace Alerts' section which has parts galore, but would you have the link for the vehicles? It occurred to me that some sections may not have been accessable to me being a newer member...
