Mine was failing when the engine got hot, thats how i noticed mine was gone.
My Temp was creeping up, so i popped the bonnet, rev the engine up, you could tell the fan was free spinning, and not drawing air though the radiator.
Replaced viscous and no prob since

This is getting to the stage where I am scared to take the beast further than 30 klms from home it zips in and out of town fine but any further and woops coolant thru the expansion tank cap when I shut it down.
The only thing left to do are the complete rebuild or the viscous ??
The three mechanics that have looked at it all say it hasnt got a head gasket issue but one thing I am sure of ... I WANT IT FIXED AND FAST!!!
I will try that paint brush on the fan routine 2morro but as I said originally never had any issues prior to that water pump related service.

The other thing it might be is your expansion tank screw cap.
I had a new tank put in 9 months a go and thought it was all ok.
However when my mate pressure tested the cap it wasnt holding any pressure at all which means the system wasnt working properly.The cap should have a pressure rating on it ..i think it's 12 psi so it should hold that pressure and release it after 12 psi is reached .
I would recommend you get the whole system pressure tested as that also revealed 4 leaks from rad hoses which just needed tightening ! If your viscous isnt roaring i would suggest that be replaced. If there is any damage to the fan, change that too.
Have the mechanics done a Tee Kay test ? that should reveal if its the head or not. Have a look at my other postings for ideas but if your in Melb there are a couple of mechanics recommended on the posts.

No LPG ... I went and spoke to a mechanic this morning due only to the fact that he had two discos in his yard and his only suggestion was to throw some gear like chemi weld in the system and see what happens.
I have no hair to pull out but I am ****ed off delux.
Have you had the radiator rodded,
neighbors to my parents, there disco started blowing stuff, 1st the header tank, replaced that and then a hose,
anyhow i told him to get his radiator rodded because they block,
He did it reluctantly, $110 bux,
it was 60% blocked,
P.S. Careful with the Chemi-weld, with radiator, it has very small tubes and block easy

Ok so I ordered a new radiator and also this whole viscous issue is as follows while idling at running temp the fan stops dead still with light pressure from a dry paint brush? Now my only question is I can hear a slight hum of the fan at tmp but it definetly is not roaring? And also would the temp rise because min hardly very goes above half way even when the fluid flies out the expansion cap? I also noticed the hoses were absolutley rock hard with pressure no play in them at temp at all??

I think youve done a head and the method of failure was this.
the viscus failing (and it sounds like it has) has allowed the engine to run a little hotter than normal.
this has allowed either the bolts to loosen up in the ally, the ally to soften or the heads to shift. when the engine cools down they clamp up.
you may be lucky and get away with just a set of gaskets and a head bolt tension but to confirm ring around to find a mechanic with a combustion gas sniffer and have them test the cooling system.
the cheap and nasty (but often usefull) version of this test is to start the engine and let it run till the cooling system pressurises then turn the engine off (by pulling the fuel pump fuse) and let it cool down. Once its cooled pull all the spark plugs (label the leads) and wind the engine over with the fuel pump disbled, any pot that blows liquid has a cooling system leak. If that doesnt do you any favors you're in a position to do a leakdown test.
Before you spend any more cash, take it back to the guy who did the work and get him to put the sniffer aka analiser aka P K test on it. Takes 2 mins and should cost you nothing. If all clear and all those parts have already been changed, I would suggest reservoir cap will now be screwed again. I have had more dud caps than good ones. While we are on the topic, the best reservoir caps I have found are the big yellow beasty lookin things you get at Repco...
Many people on here immediately assume as soon as the engine has coolant issues, the heads are screwed and the liners have moved, and your house has burned down and your going to get deported next Tuesday.
My old Rangie has suffered the same symptoms as yours more than once, and although it was caused by something completely different (LPG leak) the result was the same - Coolant ****ing out of the expansion cap, and no more water in the engine. For those who know my old rangie, yes the heads did eventually come off, but that was because the valves were sticky.
My heater was also bypassed, and the way I worked out that I had bled the air out while refilling on the side of the road in the dark, was the hoses of the back of the engine were getting hot.
If you have problems with this, replace the short hose you are bypassing the heater with, with a longer one. In the middle, cut it and fit a tee piece. Lift the long hose now and fill it from there, and join the hose back together with a straight fitting when it is full.
For anyone else who is suffering the same problems, or any water system problems. Dont assume the worst straight away, just take some precautions and you may very well be ok (and still have some money left)
