What makes you think you've got head gasket problems??

do what Mike 90 RR said, failing that change expansion tank cap.
had same problem last jan, had to stop dad from ripping all apart to fix the thermostat went and got a new cap, fix problem
mike..on going overheating problems..changed rad, thermostat and now viscous..seems to be of for a few months after each operation but then stars to overheat in traffic...found bubbles in the radiator when bleading
Fair enough .. ;)
Since you've gone to so much trouble ... You could try one more fix ... Disconnect the coolant hoses to the cabin heater
Above the Drivers side rocker cover is the metal coolant pipes with the "fill bung" ... Loop "one pipe to the other" to complete the coolant circuit
Fill up with the nose of the car up (ramps / hill / tree stump)
Mike
:)
Well ... Those metal pipes is where you fill your motor up ... They don't have to make connection to the heater .... If they are just looped & connected at the back ... Then you can still fill up at that top Bung
Failing that .... You can try ....
Just get the nose of the car up in the air (Ramps)
Take off thermostat housing & remove thermostat // replace housing only
Fill up through the radiator
Run car // check for fill
When full /// take off housing & reinstall the thermostat (Drill a 1/8 hole in the side of thermostat for air bleeding)
Top up with coolant
By the way ... If you went to the trouble of replacing the water pump ... Why not get your radiator rodded???
I haven't had anything to do with the V8's later than mid 80's. But rovers use the heater circuit for the coolant bypass circuit.
So either the heater must be connected, or fit a bypass hose connected between the pipes on the engine in place of the heater. This circuit is needed, and should not be blocked off as it allows the water pump to circulate water through the engine when the thermostat is closed.
Once the thermostat opens, the water pump can circulate coolant through the radiator.
hope you are getting through your disco woes..I was having identical problem..ok when driving but gradually overheated in slow traffic - guage still registered half but was ****ing coolant through the expansion cap. One guy here thought it was the viscous fan - suggested leaning a paint brush on the rad fan- mine stopped ! SO new viscous unit ( 220) and it now roars like a beast and keep the engine cool !

Would love some advice and direction from land rover people in the know here thanks in advance.
