    '97 D1 lost all drive.

Going to work on Friday morning, and the disco starts making some funny noises.

Started off as a light whine, very similar to the turbo, then gave the odd growl, and within about 5 km's, we suddenly lost all drive.

Auto trans fluid level was ok, and fluid was clean, so our suspicions began leaning towards the x/fer case.

Called the RAA for a truck, since that's what you pay them for.

As they hauled her up, we noticed the front wheels locked, while the rear were free. Centre diff failure perhaps?

Today we popped the lid of the x/fer case:.......................

Still has some teeth in there......

But this gear is totally smooth:

    So, what's the verdict?

It should just buff out, shouldn't it?

Very faint whine for a day or two (at first we thought it was the turbo), then on Friday morning the odd growl for a second or two. 5 km's later it was all over. No bang, no noise, just no drive. If it was a manual, you'd think it was a burned/slipping clutch.

The oil was low, but not out.

Fortunately, we have a spare in the shed. Just need to source a couple of bearings and seals for the input.
